Better Otava is a Chrome and Firefox extension that improves the user experience of Otava's digital learning material by fixing major issues and adding features like keyboard shortcuts. This has been designed with the Juuri brand of mathematics learning material in mind.

Features:

• Last two breadcrumbs in tab title (i.e. "1.2. Assigment | 1 Section | Book" instead of "Book").
• Proper Esc and Tab functionality in the math editor, which improves accessibility.
• The browser action popup (clicking on the little icon in the toolbar) and sidebar/side panel show:
  • The page's text contents in an alternative format, with math equation display and LaTeX copy support (à la mafytaulukot.fi).
  • Hints and example answers, before submitting the answer
  • Correct answers to automatically graded question types:
    • Multiple-choice matrix scoring
    • Multiple-choice scoring
    • Crossword puzzle words
    • Fill in the blank text

Keyboard shortcuts:

• Ctrl+Enter to submit a question
• Ctrl+Shift+E to toggle the example answer of the question
• Esc to unfocus the math editor
• Ctrl+Shift+Y to click on "Ymmärsin." in the self-assessment question (a question with reference name beginning with "Itsearviointi tehtävästä")

Math editor:

Otava uses a very old version of Abitti's math editor. Due to this, Otava's embedded math editor is very slow and recently (Q1 2026) broke the cursor<->equation positioning, which in turn broke the functionality the Enter key to make a new equation on the next line. Integrating the new version into Otava's product would be too time-consuming for me, so it's outside the goals of this extension.
