FluentTyper is a free, open-source writing assistant for Firefox that combines smart autocomplete, spelling suggestions, text expansion, and on-demand proofreading.

PRIVACY FIRST — NOT AN AFTERTHOUGHT

Your writing should not be the price you pay for better writing tools.

FluentTyper processes your text locally on your device. Autocomplete, spelling suggestions, text expansion, and Review work offline.

• No text uploads: your writing is not sent to a remote server for predictions or proofreading.
• No account required: start using FluentTyper without signing up.
• No cloud proofreading: Review checks your text inside your browser.
• Local storage, under your control: settings, snippets, dictionary entries, and productivity statistics stay on your device.
• Optional local personalization: learning from accepted suggestions is off by default. Enable it when you choose and clear the learned data at any time.
• Open source: the source code is available for anyone to inspect.

Review checks your selected passage or the text field you are working in — not the entire webpage. FluentTyper does not upload, log, or save the text it reviews.

Review highlights potential mistakes directly in supported text fields and editors, with distinct categories for:

• Spelling
• Grammar
• Punctuation and spacing
• Capitalization and typography

Different colors, underline styles, and category labels make findings easier to distinguish.

Click a finding to see an explanation and suggested changes. Apply a correction, ignore it, or add an unfamiliar word to your personal dictionary.

In a hurry? Fix all safe applies eligible, non-conflicting corrections together. Ambiguous spelling choices and other suggestions that need your judgment remain for individual review.

Opening Review does not change your text. You choose which fixes to apply. Corrections can be undone using your editor’s normal undo.

Start a review with Alt+Shift+R, the Review button in supported text boxes, or Review text in the extension popup. Review a selected passage or the whole focused field.

SMART AUTOCOMPLETE — LESS TYPING, MORE FLOW

Get word predictions and spelling suggestions while you type, directly where you are writing.

Use the arrow keys to choose a suggestion, Tab to accept it, and Esc to dismiss it.

Make suggestions work your way:

• Choose a vertical list, horizontal suggestions, or inline suggestions.
• Adjust the number of suggestions and how many characters you type before they appear.
• Use prefix-only mode for suggestions that begin with what you typed.
• Optionally accept suggestions with Enter, Space, or number keys.
• Choose whether to insert a space after completing a word.

AUTOMATIC CORRECTIONS, ON YOUR TERMS

Choose which corrections FluentTyper makes as you type, independently of on-demand Review.

Available rules cover common English typos and contractions, selected grammar mistakes, sentence capitalization, the English pronoun “I,” weekdays, months, and selected proper names.

Spacing and formatting tools help with punctuation, repeated spaces, currencies, and measurement units in supported prose contexts — such as “The bag weighs 10kg” becoming “The bag weighs 10 kg.”

Additional options include article and ordinal checks, smart quotes, ellipses, em dashes, French punctuation spacing, double-space-to-period, and selected bracket and operator-spacing conveniences.

Use the recommended settings, choose a typography preset, or switch individual rules on and off.

TEXT EXPANSION — STOP WRITING THE SAME THING TWICE

Create short shortcuts for text you use repeatedly.

Turn “callMe” into “Call me back once you’re free.” Build reusable replies, email templates, signatures, addresses, links, and code snippets.

Go beyond fixed text with dynamic snippet values:

• Today’s date, the current time, or a combined date and time.
• Relative dates, such as a date one week from now.
• The current page’s URL, title, or domain.
• Randomized alternatives and unique reference IDs.

Choose Text Expander mode when you want shortcuts without word predictions.

• Personal dictionary: add names, specialist vocabulary, and words you want FluentTyper to recognize.
• Optional personalization: promote words you frequently accept, using learning that stays on your device.
• Website controls: enable or disable FluentTyper for individual sites, or use an allowlist.
• Site profiles: choose different languages, inline-suggestion preferences, and suggestion counts for different websites.
• Appearance controls: customize light and dark suggestion colors, font size, and spacing.
• Code-aware behavior: recognized code regions are protected from prose-specific corrections and unwanted automatic capitalization.
• Backup and restore: export and import your settings.
• Local productivity insights: view your usage statistics and reset them whenever you choose.

10 SUPPORTED WRITING LANGUAGES

English (US), Spanish, French, Croatian, Greek, Swedish, Polish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, and Arabic.

Choose your writing language manually or use automatic language detection. Select your enabled languages and a fallback language, or set a preferred language for individual websites.

Language coverage varies by feature. Most language-specific grammar checks are for English. Other supported languages use their available spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and formatting checks.

WORKS WHERE YOU WRITE

FluentTyper works in most website text fields and many rich-text editors, including Google Docs.

Available Review actions depend on the editor. Some advanced editors support reviewing and highlighting but not direct corrections. Google Docs supports individual Review corrections rather than “Fix all safe.”

Review skips recognized code, URLs, email addresses, and other protected technical text. Password, payment, and security-code fields are excluded from Review.
