YouTube Transcript Extractor is a Firefox add-on that helps users retrieve, view, copy, and save caption text made available by YouTube for the video currently open in the browser.


When the user requests a transcript, the extension uses information associated with the current YouTube video, including the video ID and caption-track request parameters, to obtain caption information through YouTube's player and caption mechanisms. These requests go to YouTube. As a result, YouTube may be able to determine which video is being accessed for caption retrieval and processes the requests under Google's/YouTube's own policies: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

The extension's purpose is to retrieve captions for the video the user has chosen. It does not intentionally send transcript text to the extension developer or to an independent transcription provider. It does not operate a developer-controlled server.


Caption responses used for extraction are handled in the browser. The extension does not automatically keep a permanent transcript history.

The selected interface language is stored in Firefox's local extension storage. When the user opens the full-page viewer from the popup, transcript text may be passed through Firefox session storage temporarily and is removed after the viewer retrieves it. A TXT file is created only when the user chooses to download the transcript; the downloaded file is then under the user's control.


The extension does not include analytics, advertising, an account system, or a developer-operated backend. It does not intentionally sell or share transcript text with the developer or other parties. Network requests required to retrieve captions are made to YouTube as described above.


Retrieving captions is initiated by the user. Whether a transcript is available, and which languages are available, depends on the video and on YouTube. The extension cannot guarantee that YouTube will provide every caption track or translation.
