Calm Cove is a calm aquarium care game for Firefox, in a full browser tab or in the sidebar. Hand-drawn, cel-shaded 3D characters swim, drift and walk past rising bubbles and shimmering light, with the water tinted for the time of day and the season where you are -- feed them, look after them and watch your cove grow over a year of fed days.
The Cove
- Many kinds of resident: guppies, clownfish and angelfish (now and then in rare colours), crabs, shrimp, an octopus, a sea turtle, a whale and more, curios such as a submarine, a koinobori and a snowman, and corals, kelp and other plants -- each with its own way of moving.
- Five tools under your pointer: Camera, Food, Cleaner, Pet and Investigate. With the Camera, drag to move the view, right-drag or two fingers to turn it, wheel or pinch to zoom and double-click to face front; press Food to drop flakes and watch the fish come; Cleaner wipes the glass; Pet strokes a resident back and forth; Investigate opens a resident's card.
- Your own cove: each cove gets a generated name, boulders and a rock arch to hide behind, and sand with dunes and pebbles.
- Decorate and collect: drag plants and ornaments to a new spot (or press one, then a spot), solid rocks and caves for shy residents, backgrounds, and an Album of stickers and achievements for everything your cove has held or seen.
- Day, night and seasons: the water shifts through night, dawn, day and dusk from sunrise and sunset at your location, tints with the season, and follows the real sun and moon: light shafts lean with the sun, and the moon's phase, tides and eclipses show. Each day has a current; some days bring a plankton bloom or clear spell, or a warm or cool water spell. These move the water readings and sway the plants.
- Gentle on your computer: draws at 30 frames a second in a background worker (up to 60 with Smooth motion, off by default); when frames run slow it sheds specks, petals and some light shafts first, then lowers the resolution, then simplifies the outline. Power saver draws half as often, the Accessibility page can pause the animation, and it honours your reduced-motion setting.
- Picture-in-picture: a watch-only video view, so the cove can swim beside your work.
The Care Game
- Feed daily, earn coins: feed your fish once a day to earn coins. Missed days cost nothing, but eight in a row restart your streak. New residents, plants, ornaments, hats and backgrounds come on sale as your fed days add up, spread over about a year.
- Names and personalities: every resident has a name, a temper and a personality of its own; shy ones hide behind your rocks, fish have friends and rivals, and their thoughts show as small picture bubbles.
- A shop and a budget: a new cove starts with one guppy, and the rest you buy -- a resident costs more the more water it takes. A Bank tab holds your chequing, savings and emergency accounts and a coin log, and treats cheer up residents who share a temper.
- A cove that lives on: after 180 fed days pairs have young. A crowded cove or cloudy water can make fish ill, and medicine from the shop cures them; an ill fish is never lost. Six water readings, pollution to clear by hand, and a heater, filter and machines to buy.
- Goals to chase: keep your cove as a seagrass meadow, a coral reef, a wreck, a mangrove nursery or a restored shore on 30 fed days (not in a row) and the Album marks it and pays coins. Send a grown fish back to the wild: ten of a kind make that kind recovered, and wild ones then pass through the far water now and then.
- Your way to play: mouse, touch or a game controller, with a rail of icon buttons over the cove that fades when idle.
- Swim show: once two named animals are in the cove (kept rescues don't count), pick a fish to lead a show. The others swim its pattern, and how closely it keeps the pattern depends on its temper, its trust and the wild's health. Hats and swimwear help.
Visit a Friend
- Swap two codes out of band (a message, an email) to link two computers directly -- up to fifteen friends at once. Off until you switch it on.
- Visit each other: see a friend's cove, ornaments and plants, watch each other's pointers, send one emoji at a time, feed their fish (they are told when their fish eat), give them a young fish, or send one of your fish to visit for a few minutes. A switch keeps your fish at home.
- Direct link: the cove is drawn from a small recipe both sides share, so nothing is uploaded to a server. Your friend sees your IP address and the link goes through the STUN server you choose on the Visit page.
- Share one cove: up to eight people can share a single cove with no host, using taps, emoji and four set phrases. Members are asked before a friend is invited (any no stops it), fish swim in and out as people join and leave, and with four or more members a member can be voted out.
Weather (optional)
- Off by default: switch it on from the Network page and the surface shows rain ripples and dimmer light under cloud.
- Your location stays vague: one request every 30 minutes to Open-Meteo, carrying only your coordinates at the location level in force (about 3 km by default). In or near Canada it also asks Environment and Climate Change Canada for station readings.
Privacy and Control
- Nothing leaves your browser unless you turn it on: the sky is calculated locally. Visits and weather are opt-in and listed on the Network page, where an Offline switch stops everything.
- Geolocation is optional: the sky uses an approximate place (about 3 km) by default; precise (about 50 m) is opt-in on the Privacy page and lapses after 30 days. Without permission it uses manual coordinates, then a time-zone estimate.
- Available in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese and Chinese (Simplified).
