About this extension
Credibility Meter scans the page you're reading for rhetorical and structural signals that credible journalism tends to avoid: manufactured urgency ("act now!", "limited time"), medical overreach ("cures cancer", "detox and flush"), empty hype ("revolutionary", "game-changing"), vague authority appeals ("studies show", "experts say" with no named source), testimonial spam ("I lost 30 lbs in 10 days"), and sales-funnel manipulation (money-back guarantees, FDA disclaimers).
Every flag is shown to you — specific phrases, with context — so the grade is never a black box. You can see exactly why the page got the score it did.
How it works
- Opt-in only: nothing runs until you flip the toggle in the popup.
- All analysis happens locally on your device. Zero data leaves your browser.
- Click the toolbar icon to see the report card: the letter grade, a plain-English summary, and a bullet list of what was found (or couldn't be verified).
- The toolbar badge shows the grade at a glance as you browse.
The grade is not a truth verdict.
A high grade doesn't mean a page is correct — it means the page isn't waving obvious credibility red flags. A low grade doesn't mean a page is wrong — it means the page uses patterns that correlate with low-credibility content. The grade is a prompt to read more carefully, not a substitute for judgment.
Privacy & permissions
- Only two permissions: storage (remembers your on/off preference) and activeTab (reads the current page when you open the popup).
- No data is collected, stored, or sent anywhere. No accounts, no analytics, no backend.
- Fully open source (GPLv3).
