Privacy Policy
Last updated 19 August 2026
The short version
Also Known SA doesn't collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. It has no server, makes no network requests, and doesn't know who you are. Everything it does happens locally in your own browser.
What the extension does
Also Known SA scans the visible text of pages you browse for South African place names that have officially changed (e.g. Gqeberha / Port Elizabeth) and adds a small annotation showing the other name — either as a hover tooltip or appended inline, depending on your settings. All of this happens inside your browser. The extension never reads, stores, or sends the content of any page anywhere.
What data is stored, and where
The extension stores a small amount of configuration data using your browser's built-in extension storage APIs — the same mechanism every browser extension uses for settings. Nothing is sent to us, because there is no "us" to send it to: Also Known SA has no backend server.Settings (on/off, display mode, excluded sites) — stored via chrome.storage.sync, which syncs across your own devices using your browser vendor's own account sync (e.g. your Google account for Chrome, your Firefox account for Firefox). We never see this data; it travels through infrastructure your browser vendor already operates for you.
Custom name mappings you add or edit — stored locally via chrome.storage.local, on your device only, not synced anywhere.
Permissions, and why
Permission Why it's needed
storage Remember your settings and custom mappings between sessions.
host_permissions:
<all_urls> Run the page-scanning script on whatever site you're reading — the extension doesn't know in advance which sites mention a renamed place. This only lets the script read the page locally to find matches; it doesn't grant any ability to send that page's content elsewhere, and the extension doesn't.
Third parties
None. No analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting, no third-party scripts or trackers of any kind. The place-name data the extension matches against ships bundled inside the extension itself and is never fetched from a remote server.
Children's privacy
Also Known SA does not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age, because it does not collect information at all.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes — for example, if a future version adds an optional feature that does involve a network request — the date at the top of this page will be updated and the change will be described here before it ships.
