About this extension
BlockNSFW is a powerful yet lightweight browser extension that keeps your browsing safe, focused, and family-friendly. It automatically blocks pornographic and adult websites before they load — so unwanted content never reaches your screen.
Unlike simple site blockers that rely on a single list, BlockNSFW layers several detection methods that work together. It filters adult domains, understands hostnames in multiple languages, enforces SafeSearch, and uses on-device AI to read page text and scan images — catching explicit content even when the web address gives nothing away. All of it runs locally in your browser.
Version 2.0 is built for the hard moment: not only closing the door, but helping with the pull, the pause, and the choice you make.
🔑 Key Features
Adult Website Blocking – Blocks 237,000+ known adult domains before the page loads, with regularly updated blocklists.
AI Text Protection (Beta) – A small model reads the page's text on your device to catch adult pages the lists miss. It reads English and most European languages best.
AI Image Protection (optional) – Scans images on your device and blocks explicit ones — even when nothing in the URL is suspicious. Your images are never uploaded.
Multilingual Hostname Filtering – Detects adult hostnames in Chinese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Thai, and transliterated Latin, including internationalized (IDN/punycode) domains.
SafeSearch Enforcement – Forces family-safe results on Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Brave, Ecosia, Qwant, AOL Search, Presearch, and Yandex, and turns on YouTube Restricted Mode.
DNS Protection (optional) – Adds a network-level layer through a family-safe resolver you choose (Cloudflare for Families, AdGuard Family, Mullvad Family, or CleanBrowsing), or your own.
Safer Social – Blocks NSFW Reddit communities and can hide Facebook and Instagram Reels.
Follow Other Blocklists – Subscribe to blocklists other people maintain, in uBlacklist's format. They can only ever add blocks.
PIN Lock – Put a PIN over the settings that would weaken protection. It's stored as a salted hash, never as plain text.
Stats, Days Kept & Whitelist – Track what's been blocked, count the days you kept, manage your own allowlist, and review an activity audit — all stored locally.
Light & Dark – Every page is redrawn in a calm, paper-and-ink design. It starts light; switch to dark or follow your computer.
Guided Setup – A simple onboarding wizard gets you protected in seconds.
Lightweight & Fast – Runs quietly in the background with minimal impact on browsing speed.
✨ New in 2.0: Built for the Hard Moment
Gateways – Name the sites where it tends to start, like Instagram Explore or Reddit. Opening one asks you to pause first, from 5 to 60 seconds, and in your hard hours they stay closed.
The Pact – Choose a wait, from 15 minutes to 3 days. Anything that loosens protection waits it out before it happens, even with your PIN. Making protection stronger never waits.
A Friend Holds the Key – Someone you trust keeps a code in the authenticator app on their phone. Only that code lets a change through before the wait is over. They never see your browsing.
Storm Mode & Risk Hours – For a hard few hours, or the same hours every night, every layer goes to its strongest and nothing can be loosened until it ends.
Your Own Words – Your plan, a note to yourself, and someone to call, written on a good day and shown first on the blocked page.
Held at the Door – The blocked page now tells you why: six layers of protection, drawn as six doors, and the one that stopped the page.
After a Slip – A short, plain page for the morning after. A slip costs one day, never your progress.
Your Week – Every Sunday evening, your week read back: each time you turned back at the door, drawn day by day.
Back Up & Restore – Save everything in one file, and bring it to a new computer. Your PIN and your Pact are never in it.
🛡 Hard to Remove (Windows)
Anyone can remove or turn off an extension in two clicks. Extension Guard, a free and open-source companion app for Windows, locks BlockNSFW into Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox: Remove and Turn off are greyed out, it puts the lock back if anything undoes it, and uninstalling it needs a password that a parent or accountability partner holds. Settings › Security shows whether your browser is locked, and links the download: github.com/codepurse/extension-guard
👥 Who Is It For?
People working to quit porn, who want something that holds on the hard nights.
Parents who want a safer browsing environment for their kids.
Students and professionals who want to stay focused and avoid distractions.
Anyone who prefers a cleaner, family-safe internet experience.
🔒 Privacy-Friendly
The AI runs entirely on your device — no accounts, no sign-ups, and your browsing isn't tracked or sold. (Some optional features, like remote blocklist updates, DNS filtering, and checking a Supporter code, make network requests to provide them; see the privacy policy for details.)
💚 Supporter (Optional)
Every protection above is free, and stays free: paying never makes blocking stronger or weaker. If you'd like to go further, and help keep BlockNSFW going, Supporter adds the full 30-day path (the first 7 days are free), an evening check-in, your good days, when it's hardest, a letter every month, a photo and a message in your own voice for the hard moment, your progress on every computer, Supporter looks, and four more blocked-page designs. $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $89.99 once, on up to three of your browsers.
With BlockNSFW, you stay in control of what loads in your browser. Simple, effective, and built for privacy.
