Speed up videos and change playback speed on any page with HTML5 video or audio. Play Faster is a free video speed controller for Firefox that lets you set any speed from 0.1x to 16x — including on e-learning platforms whose own player stops at 2x.
WHAT'S NEW
• Editable speed presets — set your own four quick-pick speeds in Options
• Auto mute YouTube ads — toggle on or off, live, no reload needed
• A-B segment loop — in the overlay, press A to mark a start, B to mark an end, C to clear. The video loops your range automatically.
• Pitch preservation — keeps pitch correction switched on past 2x, where players often drop it
• Speed range raised to 16x, the ceiling browsers allow
• Hold Shift with arrow keys or scroll for large step adjustments
• Per-site speed memory — each domain remembers its own playback speed
• Smarter keyboard shortcut detection — stays silent in text fields, Shadow DOM inputs, and rich-text editors
WHY PLAY FASTER?
Setting the playback rate is the easy part, and every speed controller does it. The problem is that some training platforms read the rate back every few seconds and reload the page if it is above 2x — which puts you at the start of the module again. Re-applying the speed does not help, because the value you set is the value the next check reads. Play Faster changes what the check reads instead. On the training sites it recognises, that check reads 2x while your audio plays at the speed you chose — so that reload is not triggered and you keep your place.
WHERE IT DOES NOT HELP
• Courses that enforce a minimum duration — a wall-clock timer is not affected by playback speed
• Heavily sandboxed course players that strip the property Play Faster needs
• Quizzes and interactions, which are not playback and take as long as they always did
• Speeds above your browser's ceiling — browsers refuse rates past their own limit, whatever the extension asks for
• Players that fight back in ways we have not profiled — which platforms work, and how fast, depends on the browser and the player
WHERE IT WORKS
Any page with HTML5 video or audio — streaming sites, e-learning platforms, training portals, podcasts, and more. If it plays in your browser as standard HTML5 media, Play Faster can change its speed.
