Article Reader turns the current article into a clean, customizable reading view.

It was created to solve a practical Firefox limitation: ordinary translation extensions cannot operate inside Firefox’s built-in Reader View. Article Reader provides its own secure reading surface where reading, translation, highlighting, notes, references, and article tools can work together.

Features include:

On-device translation using Mozilla language models and the Bergamot engine
Saved articles, multi-color highlights, and notes
A dedicated references panel
Readable tables and syntax-highlighted code
Multiple themes and typography controls
LTR and RTL text support
Free local summaries and key points
Optional Google Cloud Translation and OpenAI-compatible providers

Article Reader has no analytics, advertising, account requirement, or developer-operated backend. Its default reading, annotation, translation, and summary features run locally.

Build requirements:
- Linux
- Node.js 20 or later; Mozilla's Node.js 24 environment is supported
- npm

Build commands:
1. npm ci
2. npm run package

The resulting extension is article-reader-firefox.zip and the unpacked build is available in dist/.

No credentials, environment variables, private registries, or proprietary build tools are required.
