Furiganai does two things, and together they turn any Japanese page into graded reading practice tuned to your exact level.
First, it adds furigana where there is none. Most Japanese text on the web shows kanji with no readings above them. Furiganai can generate those readings automatically, right on your device, so you're never stuck on an unfamiliar kanji. If a page already has furigana, Furiganai leaves it exactly as the author wrote it and only fills in the gaps.
Then it hides the furigana for kanji you already know. Furigana is a great help while you're learning, but once you know a kanji it gets in the way: your eyes grab the reading before your brain tries to recall it. Connect your WaniKani account with a read-only API token and Furiganai quietly hides the readings for every kanji you've already learned, while keeping the ones you still need.
Not sure if you remembered a reading correctly? Just hover the kanji and its furigana pops back so you can check yourself, then move on. Hiding the reading makes every line a little recall test; the hover is your instant answer key.
As you level up in WaniKani, more readings disappear on their own. The web becomes reading practice that's calibrated to exactly where you are, and grows more challenging as your level rises.
What it does:
• Adds furigana to plain Japanese text that doesn't have any, fully offline. On by default; turn it off anytime in the popup.
• Never overrides existing furigana, it only fills in the readings a page is missing.
• Hides furigana for the kanji you know, keeps it for the kanji you don't.
• Hover any hidden reading to reveal it instantly, so you can check your recall.
• Reads your real WaniKani SRS progress, so it's personal to you.
• You set the level at which a reading is hidden: Apprentice, Guru (default), Master, Enlightened, or Burned.
• Prefer no furigana at all? Pick "All kanji" to hide every reading, and hover any kanji to reveal its furigana when you need it (works without WaniKani).
Built to respect your studying:
• Furiganai never runs on WaniKani itself, so it can't undercut your reviews.
• Readings are graded per word: a multi-kanji word like 集英社 keeps its furigana until you've learned all of its kanji.
• Stays in sync automatically: as you level up, furigana disappears on its own, so what you read always matches what you actually know.
Private by design:
• No account, no backend, no tracking. Your token and progress live only in your browser.
• WaniKani is contacted only to sync your progress, in the background (when your browser starts, about once a day, and when your token changes), never on the pages you visit.
• Furigana generation runs fully on your device with a bundled dictionary. Page text never leaves your browser.
⚠ Using another furigana extension? Please disable it while Furiganai is on. Two extensions adding readings to the same page can interfere with each other and lead to doubled or wrong furigana.
To get the full potential of the extension you'll want a WaniKani account, but it works without one too: adding furigana and hover-to-reveal run on their own, no account needed. Connect a WaniKani account with a read-only API token and it also starts hiding the readings for kanji you already know.
