Hemp could have provided much of our clothing, paper and many other cellulose based products. However it is renewable and can be grown by anyone making it hard to capitalize on. So newspaper owners made up stories to scare people so they could make money on the timber they owned. Which otherwise would have been left to grow if it wasn't worth so much.
