About this extension
Drowning in tabs? TabTTL cleans them up automatically: tabs you stop using count down and move into a collapsed “Expired” group, or close. Live countdown on every tab icon, auto-grouping by site, per-site rules and smart pause. No data collected.
How it works
Every tab gets a lifetime (TTL, “time to live”). When you leave a tab, its countdown starts. Come back and it stops. If you don't return in time, the tab expires and moves into a collapsed “Expired” group: out of your way, but one click away. Prefer a clean slate? Let expired tabs close instead (you can still reopen them from your history).
Features
Perfect for
Researchers, developers, students and anyone who opens more tabs than they close. A lightweight tab manager and tab cleaner that works in the background: less clutter, better focus.
Privacy first
TabTTL collects no data: no account, no tracking, no analytics. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Features
- Automatic tab cleanup: unused tabs expire after a lifetime you choose (default: 5 minutes after you leave them).
- Live countdown on every tab: the remaining time shows right on the tab's icon. Pick your style (sweep, ring, pie, bar or time badge), and optionally show it in the tab title too.
- Auto-grouping by site: tabs from the same website are grouped automatically, colored to match the site's icon. Create custom groups too, like mail, docs and calendar under “Work”.
- Rules per website: give sites their own lifetime, or let them never expire. Keep any single tab forever with one click.
- Smart pause: countdowns pause while your computer is locked or idle, or while you use another app, so tabs only expire while you're actually browsing.
- Never loses what matters: the active tab, pinned tabs and tabs playing audio or video never expire.
- Keyboard shortcuts: Alt+Shift+K keeps the current tab forever, Alt+Shift+S pauses or resumes all countdowns.
- Quick overview: the toolbar popup shows which tabs expire next, so you can restart, keep or close them.

Good to know
- Right after installing, your open tabs are grouped by site. You can turn auto-grouping off in the settings.
- The countdown is shown by updating each page's icon (and title, if you turn that on), so websites can see it, including when countdowns are paused. You can turn off the favicon indicator or smart pause in the settings.
- Browser pages (settings, new tab, add-ons) can't show the countdown, but they still expire.
