re/read - read offline, translate and learn by Fundacja Reborn

re/read is a browser extension for reading web articles and EPUB books: whatever you open in it stays on your device and is there without an internet connection. If you read in a language you are learning, select a word or a phrase to see its translation or hear how it sounds. The words you select are then underlined wherever they come up again - in other articles and books too - until you click "Learned" in the bubble.

READER AND OFFLINE READING LIST

• Any web page turned into clean text (Alt+Shift+R, the toolbar icon, the right-click menu, or the bubble over a selection).
• Articles kept for good in the local reading list - available with no connection, even after the original page is taken down.
• An article's pictures downloaded with one press ("Download pictures" in the reader's menu) - stored with the article, available offline.
• Import of EPUB books (table of contents, footnotes, pictures) and of Markdown texts (.md).
• The "Pages" layout: the text divided into pages instead of scrolling; pages turned with a tap, by sliding a finger, with the keys or with the mouse wheel.
• Every document reopens where you stopped reading.
• The number of words and the approximate reading time of every text.
• A highlighter in four inks with notes (marks from one document or from the whole reading list export as Markdown files of quotes).
• An article or a book exported as an EPUB or Markdown file.
• A backup of everything in one file (the reading list, the highlights, the saved phrases and the settings), or an export of only the articles and books you tick ("Select"); import without duplicates.
• Search inside the open text and across the whole reading list.
• A safety copy of the reading list, the highlights and the saved phrases in the extension's own storage - if the browser ever clears the database, the data is restored from it automatically.
• Text to speech with the spoken word highlighted, speed control and pause - only with your device's offline voices, a voice per language; its own switch in the settings.
• Light, sepia, dark and E-ink themes (E-ink for e-ink screens), a choice of typefaces (also a font of your own from the device), text size, column width, line spacing, alignment and hyphenation. Links can be hidden.
• Full screen in the reader and on re/read's other pages.

TRANSLATION AND OFFLINE DICTIONARIES

• Single words and phrases translated in a bubble above the selected text.
• The Bergamot engine (the technology known from Firefox), running entirely on your device.
• About 100 language pairs to download and work with, with no internet access.
• More than 400 WikDict dictionaries, and your own dictionaries in StarDict format (from files or from a link).
• Dictionary entries under the translation in the bubble; a meaning you click is saved with the phrase.
• A field for looking up a word in your dictionaries, in re/read's toolbar popup.
• The pronunciation of a selected word or phrase, read aloud.

LEARNING VOCABULARY

• Saved phrases are underlined automatically on every page you visit and in the books you read.
• The "Learned" button removes a phrase's underlines and moves the phrase to the "Learned" list; from that list the phrase can be moved back to learning or deleted.
• The option "Underline other forms of saved words": after you save "read", "reads" and "reading" are underlined too (English only for now, with a dictionary installed).
• The option "Save the sentence with the phrase": the sentence is shown under the phrase and written to the file for Anki.
• A vocabulary page with editing, filtering and search.
• Export and import in TSV format (fully compatible with Anki).

PLAIN READER MODE

• The option "Use without a translation model" switches machine translation off. The reader, the offline reading list, the highlighter, reading aloud, dictionaries (monolingual ones too) and saved phrases work as before.
• The option "Do not show the bubble when selecting text": on ordinary pages nothing appears when you select text, and in the reader a selection only highlights the text.

SETTINGS

• A settings page divided into sections, with a list of sections and a search field for settings.
• The "Data and copies" section: how much space the models, the dictionaries, the reading list and the backups use.
• The extension switched off on the sites you choose.
• Custom CSS for the bubble, the reader and re/read's toolbar popup.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY

• No accounts, no cloud sync, no telemetry, no analytics, no ads.
• The extension connects to the network only at your request: to download language models or dictionaries and to update their lists, and - after you press "Download pictures" in the reader's menu - to download a saved article's pictures from the site the article comes from.
• The source code is open (AGPL-3.0), published on GitHub and shipped unminified.

WHAT THE EXTENSION DOES NOT DO

• No built-in spaced repetition (SRS) - export your words and phrases to Anki (in TSV) for that.
• Other forms of a saved word are recognised in English only for now; in other languages only the exact form you saved is underlined.
• No content inside embedded frames (iFrames).

INTERFACE LANGUAGES
Polish, English, German, French, Spanish and Ukrainian (the language follows the browser's settings automatically).
