- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 13331253, 2 years agoEven though Firefox TELLS me that it's installed "RegretsReporter," there is no objective sign or any evidence whatsoever that it now exists in my system. Firefox has become quite sloppy in following up with such installations, etc. Not all of us are software/internet/browser mavens. We don't need our hands held, but we do expect something more concrete than yet another hollow promise.
- Rated 2 out of 5by aminomancer, 2 years agoI agree that the purpose of the addon itself is regrettable, and that these political addons are a waste of mozilla's incredibly limited resources. I have filed 61 firefox bugs in the last couple years and only 26 have been resolved to date. And a few of those were resolved wontfix, i.e., other contributors don't think mozilla has the resources to fix them. So in that context, it's pretty undeniable that this kind of thing looks absurd.
That said, you shouldn't be writing reviews of an addon based on your appraisal of its importance or worthwhileness in some broader context. If this wasn't made by mozilla, somehow I doubt it would be getting review bombed quite so severely. Maybe the fact that it's mozilla threatens people or makes it seem more plausible that the addon could actually result in videos being censored somehow. But that's not really what reviews are for, right?
Speaking just about the addon itself, the frontend seems to work. Unfortunately it's really weighed down by performance issues, which is surprising since it really doesn't look like it needs to be so slow, or at least to slow down youtube itself all the time. I tried to ascertain the cause so I could give more constructive feedback, but it seems like a convergence of many factors.
Aside from the frontend, unfortunately I think the data will be virtually useless because of rampant sampling bias. Well, that won't stop someone from TRYING to use it, but it would crumple under any academic standards, let alone peer review. Clearly the vast majority of people interested in installing this addon will be the kinds of people who think the internet needs to be censored to protect people. Namely, people who think that speech can be a form of violence.
Whether that's right or wrong really has no bearing on the worth of the extension or the study. But unfortunately that belief likely goes hand-in-hand with an interest in mitigating or regulating media that's perceived to be harmful, therefore an interest in this addon. So it would not be surprising if polling the users of this addon revealed an overwhelming sampling bias in favor of censorship.
What kinds of artifacts would that create is a more complicated question, but a simple example would be that the majority of regrets reported will be on one particular end of the political spectrum, because the users are leaning so heavily toward the other end and will tend to regret watching videos with political speech that makes them uncomfortable.
That's just one example though, a more thorough analysis could probably find dozens. It's just not a proper way to conduct a political study, but I can see how there isn't really any alternative that informs the users and respects their privacy (besides just not doing this at all).
Anyway, reviewing this as a purely technical product, it's pretty mediocre compared to other webextensions that do similar things. With a name like mozilla attached to this, and with third-party extensions vastly outperforming it, the performance issues make me think very little effort was put into this project. Like, maybe just the bare minimum necessary for a publicity stunt, similar to the B!tch to Boss addon.
So my final verdict is that even if you like the idea, if you want youtube to recommend inappropriate or offensive videos less often, or even if you'd like it if youtube censored videos for offensive or politically controversial speech to a greater extent, this one's a hard pass due to crippling youtube itself. I'll be sure to update this review if the lag issues are ever fixed. - Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 17124663, 2 years ago

- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 13767423, 2 years agoFrankly you need to be gathering data based on the recommendations page... i.e. what people are 'not interested' in... what channels they don't want to see again, what they're reporting and why etc...
And evidence to what extent Google/YouTube disregard that data. It's the recommendations they make that are the root of the problem. - They pay no attention to direct feedback either! - Rated 5 out of 5by Rufous Potoo, 2 years ago

- Rated 5 out of 5by PntBlnk, 3 years agoTo collect truly useful data you'll need to add an option to the menu of each recommended video (where the "Not Interested" option is). 99% of the time I already know the recommendation is of zero interest and won't play the video just so I can register my regret.
I'll watch this with interest. Please save us all from the useless YouTube recommendation system, Mozilla devs!
