IS FACEBOOK EVIL?
WHY FACEBOOK BLOCKER?
Do you know what the "I like"-Button is? A means of sharing what you like? Yes, true. And what else? A means of saving a near-complete history of your online activities!
Whenever you visit a page that has the "I like"-Button, the button tells FB about that visit. And if you are logged in to FB, FB will be able to save the information that YOU visited THAT PAGE at THAT TIME. And
since you are logged in to FB all the time out of convenience, FB has a complete profile of all pages that you ever visit (i.e of all the pages with this fiendish button, when was the last time you saw a page without?).
Facebook Blocker is a tiny Addon that blocks the flow of information from third-party sites to FB, but still lets you use FB itself and even the "I like"-Button. The only difference is that your data is ONLY submitted the moment you click the button, and not just by only looking at a page.
With Facebook Blocker you can surf the web while being logged-in to FB for convenience, but without FB being able to link the visits of third-party sites to your FB account.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It's very simple and unobstrusive: Any request to facebook.com
that originates from a URL other than facebook.com
is stripped of all cookies (What is a cookie?
When you visit a page with "I like"-Button, the button will display normally but will not be able to connect to FB (as a side effect, it will never be greyed out to show that you already liked that page, but don't be tricked, you can't like twice :-).
When you click the button a small window will open. And since this window technically originates from facebook.com
, cookies will be sent to FB and the window will fullfill your "Like-request" and close iself again.
All in all, this addon disables auto-submitting data to FB if you just visit a page. But if you decide to like that page, you will need not a single click more than usual.
