Reviews for Simple Tab Groups
Simple Tab Groups by Drive4ik

by RogueKitsune, 6 years agoLike other I am switching over from Quicksaver's Tab Groups, so there will be plenty of comparisons to it.
The Good...
Pretty much everything UI related is better compared to Tab Groups. I like being able to set an image or colour to group. The menus and such also seem much more responsive.
The Ok...
I like that there are keyboard shortcuts but I would really like to be able to change the keybinding back to "ctrl + `" and "ctrl + shift + `"
The Bad...
Migrating from Quicksaver's Tab Groups to Simple Tab Groups was a bit rough. First I made sure to "back up" my tab groups by bookmarking them in folder named after their group. Then I installed Simple Tab Groups and disabled Tab Groups. After restarting only a few of my tabs showed up in a group even though the group had a tab count 563. So I restarted Firefox again. This time all my tabs showed up but I now had two groups with each with a copy of all my tabs. Repeating opening and closing Firefox continued the duplication of the group even after I started moving tabs into groups. To fix this I had to close all open tabs and restart. After that everything started working fine.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that this addon doesn't really like the about:* pages. Opening, for example about:config, does not bind it to a specific group instead it acts more like a pinned tab. In addition about:newtab does not load correctly when coming back to it (search bar, top sites, etc. don't show up)
The Ugly...
I know nothing can be done about it at this time but I still have to complain about it. I hate how this addon switches between groups. Essentially all the "current" tabs are closed and then new tabs are opened with the URLs from the other group.
TLDR
Good addon, but has some areas that need improvement
Disclaimer:
I only run nightly builds of Firefox, so there is a chance the issues I saw were caused by some change/defect in Firefox.

Developer response
posted 6 years agoPlease update add-on to latest version (v2.2)
In this version I fix duplicate groups/tabs.
About "about:config" and etc.: this is not supported bu Firefox WebExtentions API
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/WebExtensions/API/tabs/create
For security reasons, in Firefox, this may not be a privileged URL. So passing any of the following URLs will fail:
chrome: URLs
javascript: URLs
data: URLs
file: URLs (i.e., files on the filesystem. However, to use a file packaged inside the extension, see below)
privileged about: URLs (for example, about:config, about:addons, about:debugging). Non-privileged URLs (e.g., about:blank) are allowed.
The New Tab page (about:newtab) can be opened if no value for URL is provided.
Version 2.1 and above has option to fast group switching (in options page)
Thanks for your feedback!

- Rated 1 out of 5by Graviloquence, 5 days agoBuggy and unintuitive. Any time I tried to use this add-on I thought I was going to lose all my tabs just trying to get them back out of a group.
- Rated 1 out of 5by malau, 7 days agoI wanted something that actually MOVED a tab into an actual group !! Not just tagged an open tab as being in a group !!!!!
With this extension, as soon as you have added the tab to a group, you think "I can close it now, it's in a group". NO IT ISN'T ! You close the tab and it's gone ! Pretty pointless extension !
Totally doesn't do what it's name implies !!!!! - Rated 5 out of 5by snek, 9 days agoThe backups of this addon saved me all my tabs when the shitty Firefox 127 update decided to nuke my whole history/open tabs etc without a way to restore it. Just trusty old STG churning out backups which I could restore from. Just for that the 5 stars are justified, but on top of that it also is a very useful addon.

- Rated 5 out of 5by Andreas, 17 days agoGreat add-on. Coming from chrome it takes a bit of getting used to, as it isint as polished and intuitive. I really do only have one problem with it tho:
For some reason you cant specify where the backups folder is placed. It just defaults to where firefox's downloads folder is. And i dont want this backupfolder to be in my downloads. plz fix. - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 18451857, 19 days ago

- Rated 2 out of 5by Pal1ndrome, 20 days agoWhy does it need permission to "access your data for all websites"? A tab organizer shouldn't need access to my passwords I am typing to a website.

- Rated 5 out of 5by DeepDive9984, a month agoIf you have more than five tabs open or more than two windows to separate your tabs thematically, do yourself a favor and install this add-on. If you're a keyboard shortcut lover, set them up and enjoy the organization of your tabs taken to the next level.
- Rated 5 out of 5by JoeGP, a month agoSo far 5 stars, but I haven't used it that long.
It allows me to create groups like in Chrome, but unlike Chrome, these simple tab groups replace the all the previous tabs you have open (when you switch to a different group).
Other extension open them in a new window and load them all, which I don't want, I mean I have groups with 1000+ tabs in them and loading so many can crash weaker computers or cause certain websites to block you.
Others like Chrome open the new tab group in the same window making it cluttered and unorganized.
Your ungrouped tabs are not lost when switching to a group, but I still recommend creating a group for them, just call it 'casual' or 'random'.
And unlike new windows or Chrome tab groups the 'vacation' or 'job hunting' group you weren't supposed to be looking at at work can be quickly switched to/from and perfectly hidden.
I was afraid it doesn't have backup options, but thankfully it does.
This plugin and Download Manager (S3) made it so I can pretty much switch over to using Firefox instead of Chrome, and that's pretty huge. - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 17846056, a month ago

- Rated 5 out of 5by MC, a month agoLot of customization options & a bit confusing to use at first, but once you figure it out very convenient! This will be a great hold-off until the Firefox team offers a native, built-in feature.
