Thanks but no thanks. Shall i use brave, edge or chrome again, there i know, that i'm sniffed!

For one, the videos I flag have shown up on my recommended again. I realize this may be due to the fact that I am not logged in to YouTube and I clear my cookies once I am done browsing. However, considering that other add-ons keep my settings in spite of that fact, it is annoying at best and triggering at worst. I am willing to give Mozilla the benefit of the doubt, however, especially since this add-on is quite new.
So that is one star taken off. The other star is taken off because there is no way of blacklisting entire channels. Given that many channels provide relatively the same amount of content, that is a very strange feature to leave out. There are many channels who effectively show up on everyone's recommendations no matter what content you watch on YouTube that not everyone would like to see. I am only taking off one star for this because, again, this is a new add-on, and I know Mozilla is always open for feedback, and I don't want to drag down the rating too much. Still, I can't help but feel as though this feature is intuitive for the add-ons purpose, thus it is a necessary one. - 评分 3 / 5来自 Firefox 用户 13743914,1 年前Thank you for made me remove the extension via display survey tab sometimes repeately. I had to read the notes at GitHub to realize this is NOT an actual working browser extension, it is an EXPERIMENT, and the notes specifically state "If you opted in to participating in Mozilla’s research you may have been assigned to a control group for which the button is not available. In this case, in order to support our research, we ask that you leave the extension installed for at least one month and continue to use YouTube as normal." WHAT IS THE POINT of having a control group that cannot access the extension's function? If I can't actually use the extension, why have it installed?!?!?

Firefox has become quite sloppy in following up with such installations, etc. Not all of us are software/internet/browser mavens. We don't need our hands held, but we do expect something more concrete than yet another hollow promise.

I have filed 61 firefox bugs in the last couple years and only 26 have been resolved to date. And a few of those were resolved wontfix, i.e., other contributors don't think mozilla has the resources to fix them. So in that context, it's pretty undeniable that this kind of thing looks absurd.
That said, you shouldn't be writing reviews of an addon based on your appraisal of its importance or worthwhileness in some broader context. If this wasn't made by mozilla, somehow I doubt it would be getting review bombed quite so severely. Maybe the fact that it's mozilla threatens people or makes it seem more plausible that the addon could actually result in videos being censored somehow. But that's not really what reviews are for, right?
Speaking just about the addon itself, the frontend seems to work. Unfortunately it's really weighed down by performance issues, which is surprising since it really doesn't look like it needs to be so slow, or at least to slow down youtube itself all the time. I tried to ascertain the cause so I could give more constructive feedback, but it seems like a convergence of many factors.
Aside from the frontend, unfortunately I think the data will be virtually useless because of rampant sampling bias. Well, that won't stop someone from TRYING to use it, but it would crumple under any academic standards, let alone peer review. Clearly the vast majority of people interested in installing this addon will be the kinds of people who think the internet needs to be censored to protect people. Namely, people who think that speech can be a form of violence.
Whether that's right or wrong really has no bearing on the worth of the extension or the study. But unfortunately that belief likely goes hand-in-hand with an interest in mitigating or regulating media that's perceived to be harmful, therefore an interest in this addon. So it would not be surprising if polling the users of this addon revealed an overwhelming sampling bias in favor of censorship.
What kinds of artifacts would that create is a more complicated question, but a simple example would be that the majority of regrets reported will be on one particular end of the political spectrum, because the users are leaning so heavily toward the other end and will tend to regret watching videos with political speech that makes them uncomfortable.
That's just one example though, a more thorough analysis could probably find dozens. It's just not a proper way to conduct a political study, but I can see how there isn't really any alternative that informs the users and respects their privacy (besides just not doing this at all).
Anyway, reviewing this as a purely technical product, it's pretty mediocre compared to other webextensions that do similar things. With a name like mozilla attached to this, and with third-party extensions vastly outperforming it, the performance issues make me think very little effort was put into this project. Like, maybe just the bare minimum necessary for a publicity stunt, similar to the B!tch to Boss addon.
So my final verdict is that even if you like the idea, if you want youtube to recommend inappropriate or offensive videos less often, or even if you'd like it if youtube censored videos for offensive or politically controversial speech to a greater extent, this one's a hard pass due to crippling youtube itself. I'll be sure to update this review if the lag issues are ever fixed. - 评分 5 / 5来自 Firefox 用户 17124663,1 年前
