New interface is horrible.
Add-on now requires third-party software to wokr properly.
Addon watermarks videos and agressively solicits "donations".

Avoid it.

Not fully working on OS X? Rated 4 out of 5 stars

have Firefox 37.0.2 on OS X Yosemite, Windows 7, and Ubuntu Linux. Installed VDH 5.2.1 specially on all three. In Linux and Windows it works fine (thanks!), but in OS X it doesn't appear to detect FLV downloads (from a supported website), though MP4 downloads work fine from Youtube. On OS X VDH 4.9 and FF 35, downloads work fine. Is VDH 5 not fully tested on OS X?

Need support ? http://www.downloadhelper.net/support.php

The latest version is only offering mp4s on youtube for download. How do we get .3gps and .flvs back? For now reverted to version 5.0.1 which shows all of the variants.

Update: 5.2.1 resolves it. All the variants are back.

This is a bug. You may prefer stepping forward to 5.2.1: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/video-downloadhelper-q-and-a/1KAASTxqU_E

5.x is pretty slow Rated 2 out of 5 stars

In previous versions it was very intuitive and fast, the 5.x+ does the same but slower. It used to be like a rabbit now is like a turtle.

Don't download the converter Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Worked ok until they offered to convert a file and then they put this ugly mark in the corner until you by the converter license. Couldn't figure out how to just download without converting after that so good riddance.

Still the Best Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This addon is still the best free video downloader for Firefox.
The number of supported sites is huge, and updated constantly.
Completely no charge unless you need to use conversion feature.

I only reccomend version 4.9! Version 5-5.2 is terrible Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Hi VideoDownloadHelper Developer
I have used this add-on for a long time and was very happy with it, especially version 4.9. But not any more, version 5-5.2 is absolutely horrible to work with. I could not recommend it to any one, ever.
I hope you will go back to the more simple user interface you had it the past, but i doubt that you will
I can only give the current version 1 star
Version 5-5.2 ~ 1 STAR
Version 4.9.X ~ 5 STAR

Edit 2 on the Video DownloadHelper

Firstly its a shame your taking the reviews personal, they are not, they are just personal expression of users, in this case mine.

I still love Video DownloadHelper (4.9)

Your saying "There is no real difference between the 4.9 UI and 5.2.0 is you just use the menu on the companion button."

There is no way of making version 5-5.2 look and or behave like version 4.9. The User interface of version 5-5.2 is CLUMSY and NOT INTUITIVE like it previously was in version 4.9.

Your comparison of the two version is like saying apples taste like wood

Finally i would like to say your doing a fantastic job, your coding is making life so much easier for so many people.

Version 4.9 RULES

Version 5 ~ hmm

There is no real difference between the 4.9 UI and 5.2.0 is you just use the menu on the companion button.

Super cool man! I watched the instruction video before using and it worked exactly like you said! *Duh* It was nice to be able to turn off the hit detector as I run multiple tabs. Also, I liked that it created its own little home for downloads so they don't get mixed up with my other files. It rocks! Recommend.

Zrobiło się do niczego Rated 1 out of 5 stars

No he tenido problemas. Sigue siendo la mejor extensión para descargar multimedia.

Doesn't work for.. youtube?! Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Apart from the annoying downloads that require a converter (sure.. As-if you can't just download the raw files and let me convert it manually) there doesn't seem to be a option that works to download simple youtube video's.

I understand you want to make money but just make your entire extension paid if you can't use it properly for free.

Muy buen complemento. Realmente funciona en muchos sitios y día a día va mejorando.

Does what it says it'll do Rated 5 out of 5 stars

You said "angry people communicate much more than satisfied ones."
It's always the case for all, so there are people who act and those speak bla bla bla it's easier...
Great job your project and good luck !

Finally, version 5 Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The best downloader for videos.

Release 5 = without me! Rated 1 out of 5 stars

After long ride with VDH, this upgrade sucks. After awhile, my clips comes with a 3D code bar integrated in a corner. Sorry, but from now, I'll turn over a new Firefox's module. Thanks for the marvelous work you did...until release 5!

This add-on started as donationware. When the version 5 came out, there was a statement that it requires a converter which is a public domain freeware software, a little tricky to configure and install, so it was delivered as a convenient package with the installer. A few weeks later, "public domain freeware" evolved into converter which has to be licensed.

Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly fine with people wanting to be paid for their work. This add-on is regularly updated, and it takes a lot of time and effort to keep it and improve it. It is fair to ask to be paid. However, there are several very big issues with the approach which this developer took.

1. Apparently, the developer asks to pay for use of software (converter) which, as he stated himself when version 5 was released but not yet approved by Firefox, is a public domain freeware. I am not sure if this is even legal.

2. The program now is definitely shareware. However, the description states that it is free. It is not free. With the huge stamp which it leaves on the downloaded videos, it is useless in its free version.

3. If you want to buy it, you have to face a significant risk. The software vendor no longer accepts Paypal. They ask for your credit card. And yet, there is absolutely no contact information for the person or company behind it - no address, not even a telephone number, no company name, not even the country where this person is located. There is only a web-based contact form. Basically, you are just asked to provide your credit card number in a blind faith that it is a legitimate business who will not misuse it and who has means to protect it. I personally never give my card number to shady businesses without any contact information. I try to avoid them, but if I can't, I use paypal. There are workarounds - virtual single-use credit card numbers, but they are a hassle to use.

The price close to $30 also seems to be a little steep for a shareware which does the same thing as many (free) alternatives, but this is the least of my complaints - every software manufacturer has right to set any price they want and gamble that the market will accept it.

It is a pity that the add-on which was so good took this direction of development.

Our model has not changed since 2008: free product + extra converter feature to pay for development (sorry we have to eat too).
1. you do not pay for the converter which is under GPL (and it would be perfectly legal to charge for it, which we don't do). You pay (if you want to) for the conversion service. We could have charged something else to make a living from, but that way was convenient for everyone.
2. it is free except for conversion which you are not compelled to use. Again, this has worked that way since 2008.
3. you do not give us your credit card number (we never get and don't want to have this information), you do so to stripe.com which is a well-known web payment operator (https://stripe.com). This is exactly the same way you used to do on PayPal.

i want the fast download back! the FAST download, not your keyboard AND mouse solution xD
now i have to click three times? the save option doesnt work, so every time its a: click on VDH button, then the video, and fast download...
no no no, it cant be!
just one click, like the old version.
i have to get me the old version...
get it done, or its forever 1star :(

nope, max. of 3, if im doing this ^^
with the old version you just had to klick the VDH button, now you have to press shift? why? why? whyyyy????
/ i could use that or a kombo of buttons, like STRG+D but why? whats the point in throwing the one click on the app-button out?

You have that feature from the companion button since 5.0.1 (hold SHIFT when clicking the button) and 5.1.2 with the companion button. Check http://www.downloadhelper.net/howto.php
So is it a 5 stars now ? :)
