Smart Bookmarks — Privacy Policy

The short version: Smart Bookmarks stores your data locally on your device. If you choose to enable cloud sync, your data is stored in your own Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive account. We do not operate servers, collect analytics, or have access to your data.
1. Data We Collect

Smart Bookmarks does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on our servers. We do not operate a backend service. All data remains either on your device or in your own cloud storage account.
2. Data Stored Locally

The extension stores the following data in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB):

Bookmarks — URLs, page titles, and any notes you add
Folders — folder names and icons you create for organizing bookmarks
Thumbnails — page screenshots or og:image previews captured when you save a bookmark


This data never leaves your device unless you opt in to cloud sync.
3. Cloud Sync (Optional)

If you choose to sign in with Google or Microsoft, your bookmarks and thumbnails are synced to your own cloud storage account:

Google Drive — data is stored in the App Data Folder, a hidden folder accessible only by Smart Bookmarks
Microsoft OneDrive — data is stored in the App Folder, a hidden folder accessible only by Smart Bookmarks


In both cases:

Your data lives in your own account — we cannot see or access it
We cannot access your documents, photos, or any other files in your cloud storage
You can revoke access at any time from your Google or Microsoft account settings
Revoking access deletes the app data from your cloud storage


1. Permissions Explained
   tabs Read the title and URL of your open tabs when you choose to save them as bookmarks
   bookmarks Import bookmarks from your browser's native bookmark manager (only when you initiate an import)
   storage Save extension settings and authentication tokens locally
   contextMenus Add a "Save to Smart Bookmarks" option to the right-click menu
   activeTab Capture a thumbnail screenshot of the current tab when saving a bookmark
   identity Authenticate with Google or Microsoft for optional cloud sync
2. Third-Party Services

Smart Bookmarks communicates only with the following services, and only when you opt in to cloud sync:

Google APIs (accounts.google.com, googleapis.com) — for Google sign-in and Drive sync
Microsoft APIs (login.microsoftonline.com, graph.microsoft.com) — for Microsoft sign-in and OneDrive sync


We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking, or any other third-party services.
6. Data Retention

Local data is retained until you uninstall the extension or clear browser data
Cloud data is retained until you revoke app access from your Google or Microsoft account


1. Children's Privacy

Smart Bookmarks does not knowingly collect any personal information. Since all data is stored locally or in the user's own cloud account, no personal information is transmitted to us.
8. Changes to This Policy

If this policy is updated, the "Last updated" date at the top will change. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
