O tomto rozšírení
Hold Shift and hover a word in Japanese, Spanish, Italian or English to see what it means. Torval works on any web page, on YouTube and Netflix subtitles, and in your own videos and books, and makes an Anki card in one click.
It finds the dictionary form for you: 食べなかった finds 食べる, and hablábamos finds hablar. Meanings are in English, or in Spanish for Spanish speakers learning English.
How much you already know
Mark the words you know, and one number at the top of the page says how much of it you'll understand. On a video, it measures the whole transcript before you press play, so you know whether it's worth watching. It's off until you turn it on.
Subtitles you can read
On YouTube and Netflix, step between lines with A and D, replay the one you're on, and hover any word in it.
Your own videos and books
The Torval player opens MKV, MP4 and WebM files with the subtitles inside them, or with a separate SRT, VTT or ASS file. One key lines up subtitles that come early or late, and it remembers where you stopped. Add an epub or a text file and read it chapter by chapter, with the same popup.
Anki cards in one click
• Into your own Anki through AnkiConnect, with whatever note type you already use
• The word, the sentence with the word in bold, the meanings, a picture of the scene and the spoken line
• Pitch accent for Japanese; the stressed vowel and the article for Spanish and Italian, so you learn "il cane", not just "cane"
• On Netflix, one click on the Torval button allows the picture. Firefox doesn't let add-ons record a copy-protected video's sound, so those cards come without it
What it doesn't do
No account, no subscription, no telemetry, no analytics. The dictionaries ship inside the add-on, and nothing you read, look up or save leaves your computer.
Free, under the Functional Source License. Dictionaries: JMdict from the EDRDG for Japanese; Wiktionary through Wiktextract for Italian, Spanish and English, with Spanish meanings written for Torval and from the Spanish Wiktionary; all CC BY-SA 4.0. Pitch accent from Kanjium; word frequency from JPDB, hermitdave/FrequencyWords and Wikipedia.
