Build a rhythm from four small voices: Wood, Metal, Low and Shaker.
Between the Knocks is a compact step sequencer in a Firefox popup. Click a step to cycle through off, soft, medium and strong. Each instrument can use an 8-, 12- or 16-step row. Different row lengths repeat independently, creating evolving patterns before they meet again at the shared cycle boundary.
Set a tempo from 60 to 180 BPM, add up to 60 percent swing, adjust each row's level and control the output level. The interface shows the current step and the length of the complete shared cycle. A tabletop study demonstrates a 12 / 16 / 8 / 16 pattern; a blank grid lets you build your own. Steps beyond a shortened row's active length are retained if you extend the row again.
Audio begins only when you press Play. Any applied edit stops playback so the revised pattern starts cleanly on the next Play. Sound stops when the popup is hidden or closed. Audio scheduling and visual step indication are separate; the grid is not rebuilt on each tick. If a large scheduling interruption is detected, playback stops with a restart message instead of dumping overdue notes at once.
Export one complete shared cycle as a mono, 16-bit WAV at 22,050 Hz. The largest supported cycle is 48 sixteenth-note steps, lasting 12 seconds at 60 BPM. Voice tails wrap into the beginning of the exported loop. A fixed safety gain is used in both preview and export; WAV peaks are reduced further only if needed to avoid clipping. A silent pattern can be exported as silence. The export is synthesized from the pattern, not a microphone or system-audio recording.
All four voices are generated locally; there are no downloaded samples, third-party audio libraries or music-service dependencies. The synthesized timbres suggest tabletop percussion rather than recordings of specific objects. Preview sound also depends on your device, speakers and browser audio output. Start at a comfortable device volume.
The pattern, row lengths, tempo, swing and levels save in this browser. Playback position is not persisted and sound does not resume automatically. Forget saved pattern removes the saved copy while leaving the current open pattern available; editing it again saves a new copy.
