    • Disabled custom new tab no longer touches the browser's new tab at all — removed the chrome_url_overrides.newtab manifest entry introduced in 1.2.0. That manifest declaration made the browser itself intercept every new tab (showing the "extension changed your new tab" warning bar) regardless of the toggle, and on Edge/Firefox the restore navigation to Chrome's native new tab URL failed, leaving a blank page. The custom new tab is now applied purely opt-in via service-worker redirection that only runs when the toggle is enabled — a disabled toggle means zero new tab interference
    • Native new tab URL detection is now cross-browser — the opt-in redirect recognizes about:newtab (Firefox), edge://newtab (Edge), and chrome://newtab (Chrome/Chromium), so enabling the custom new tab works consistently on all supported browsers
    • When the custom new tab toggle is off, a tab that still lands on the extension's new tab page (opened directly, or toggle flipped mid-load) now shows a neutral themed blank page instead of attempting any navigation — the extension never rewrites the tab's URL from the page itself

    • Custom new tab page now off by default — new installs keep the browser's native new tab experience until the user explicitly enables the feature in Settings → General
    • Clean address bar on the custom new tab page — switched from service-worker tabs.onCreated redirection to the standard chrome_url_overrides.newtab manifest entry, so the address bar no longer shows the extension URL and the toggle reacts instantly without MV3 service-worker wake-up races
    • True native new tab restore — when the custom new tab toggle is disabled, the tab now navigates back to the browser's genuine native new tab page (search box, shortcuts, wallpaper) instead of a blank page; a blank themed page remains as a fallback if the navigation is blocked
    • newTabTitle i18n key across all 18 locales for the fallback blank page title
    • Custom new tab toggle intermittently not responding (root cause: MV3 service worker sleeping through tabs.onCreated)
    • Workspace flash on new tabs when the custom new tab page was disabled (boot guard hides the workspace until settings confirm the toggle state)

    • Added "search" permission to manifest (stripped for Firefox/Safari builds)
    • Firefox/Safari fallback: opens Google search directly
