Problems Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This (or maybe it was its predecessor, "Find All") used to work just fine. But it seems that more and more nowadays, it has been glitchy. I'll be typing, and the Find bar keeps quickly appearing and disappearing as I'm doing so, even though I'm not typing CTRL+f. This is the latest glitchy situation I've been encountering with this add-on, but problems started occurring before that (usually related it making it appear or disappear). In the past at various times I've encountered a similar situation where I'll begin typing and then the the Find bar would suddenly appear, "hijacking" the line from where I was typing it even though I didn't summon the Find Bar.

Update pages often pop up, which indicates that FindBar Tweak is itself being tweaked on a frequent basis, and the problems I've had with it seem to more or less come and go, although for months now it seems like there's usually something exasperating which diminishes its basic functionality at any given time.

The thing I've always liked about this add-on is that it highlights all instances of a search term in the scroll bar on the right side of a page's window, which can be useful. Hopefully this latest behavior will also disappear soon.

First of all, nothing about the "Find All" add-on is a predecessor to this add-on. The Find All feature included in this add-on is completely unrelated to it. This add-on just so happens to provide a similar functionality of the older "Find All" add-on, which was the reason it has become a viable alternative to it since.

Whatever problems you are having with the findbar appearing and disappearing as you describe it are likely to do with the Find as You Type functionality, and they're definitely derived from a conflict with other add-ons you have, as I've never experienced anything of the sort, nor have ever had any reports of anything similar.

Also, "it seems like there's usually something exasperating which diminishes its basic functionality at any given time" -> I have no idea what to make of this. Please use the support page or e-mail me directly, describing with as much detail as you can the problems you are having. In particular, please try disabling all your other add-ons except for FBT and let me know if the problems persist. Without this information I will never be able to fix these issues you are having.

For future reference: reporting problems through the proper support means will yield much better results, for you and for myself. I hope I misunderstood your tone, and if I did I apologize for the harshness of my next words, but to me it sounds like you're implying that the constant "tweaking" (as you put it, which in reality is the result of me trying my hardest to fix every issue I know of and accommodate for as many requests from other users as I can) has been purposefully to reduce the qualities and functionality of the add-on. I do not appreciate the implication that I'm doing a bad job just because there are issues that I've never heard of. If you have been experiencing issues for a while, you should have reported them already, instead of expecting me to magically know about them and fix them.

Thanks for the Find All tabs feature. Now it's very useful. It will be better, if you implement multi word search, that you promised earlier. That is the only feature, why I use fastest search. Very needed.

I'm glad you're enjoying the new features. :)

Unfortunately I was much to optimistic before. Multi-word search is a very complex feature to add, so it's not something that I can "just add". I do want to eventually work on it to add it to the add-on, along with a lot more extra features, but it's impossible to set a release date for any of these things, especially because my availability to work on the add-on is very limited lately. I hope you understand.

I'm glad you like the add-on but I have to ask, is there any reason why you gave it a lower rating? That doesn't match your characterization of "indispensable" at all.

"New: Find All feature, show all the matches in the page in the sidebar!"

Good news! At last!
But again there is bad news. You removed compatibility with Firefox 40 and below. But now actually ESR version - 38.3.0! Next ESR version will be approximately on March 2016!
Also I don't find my last review on May 2015.

Yep, I'm sorry it took so long. :)

As a rule, I remove compatibility code for older versions of Firefox as soon as it's not needed, not only to improve performance but also because my availability to maintain the add-on is extremely limited, so the less code I have to maintain, the better its development will flow.

You make a good point about ESR support though. In the future, I will try to at least keep compatibility with the latest ESR. I will also try to re-add compatibility with the current ESR (Firefox 38), but unfortunately there is a lot that would need to be changed/re-added, and then I'd have to test everything again (these changes go much beyond the simple "this piece of code is not needed anymore", those are easy to add back of course, but other deeper changes are much more complex)... It's something I just can't do right this moment so I can't make any promises this will happen any time soon, or even at all depending on my availability. I hope you understand.

As for your past review, I admit I don't remember what it was about. But it's possible it may have become outdated due to the recent FBT releases, so I may have flagged it for moderation along with a few others. (Moderation means it will be looked at by an AMO moderator/reviewer who decides if the review is valid, and usually removes it if not. For instance, reviews with old bug reports that have been fixed for a while are not helpful to anyone.)

Reply to "CTRL-F issue" Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thanks. New version works almost great with Ctrl-F hits!

But there is a tiny flaw, something like an asynchronous problem. After hitting Ctrl-F, it needs some time until findbar appears (depending on current system load conditions). Until this happens, keystrokes wont be buffered and forwarded to findbar, but get lost. So, if you type "^Fsearchexpression" (where "^F" stands for Ctrl-F), it may happen that after findbar appears its search field is filled with "archexpression" only.
Of course, in most cases this leads to the same "find spots", therefore it isn't that dire.

Thanks – Peter

This behavior should be fixed in version 2.0.1, which I've already uploaded. If after you update it still doesn't work correctly for you, please let me know either by e-mail or create an issue in the support page.

This is one of those essential add-ons. I can't stand not having automatic find bar closing and match highlights anymore, and the focus feature is gorgeous. And it works beautifully considering how much functionality it adds. Thanks for making this!

A surprising effort and feature-full add-ons Rated 4 out of 5 stars

It was very surprising with the sudden release of version 2 with amazing set of feature, particularly;
- New: almost complete code rewrite, with many stability and performance enhancements across the board!
- New: multiprocess firefox (e10s) compatibility
- New: brand new preferences tab with a new "About" pane

The slow-down when using Sight and Highlight is no longer noticeable.
A beautiful new setting layout.
Excellent support considering e10s is still a work-in-progress.
Plentiful of option to play with and working right away, e.g. Highlight color. Furthermore having add-on that still being develop and support in 2015 is a great sight to see considering Mozilla recent (deserving) hatred/sadness cause by their marketing decision.

I truly liked the add-on's FindBar Tweak, however there was one annoyance that I believe people should be aware of and why I could not rate it 5-star. Whenever you open the "setting" or "option" of Find Bar tweak it does a "Phone Home" to "", even worse still is that it a HTTP link rather than HTTPS. There doesn't seem to be a built-in option to disable it, you will need to use some 3rd-party add-on or Firewall to block them.

Aside from that problem described above, it was difficult not to sign up to Mozilla to thank the developer in some way. Putting that aside, Mozilla sign up system is terrible, "8 chars password only", using Google's "Please fill in this house number captcha", however it was quick and easy to sign up.

Hope you enjoy the add-on and maybe my review will help you decide to use Findbar Tweak or support the developer Quicksaver's incentive.

Thank you for the add-on.

PS: It weird how this version did not get Signed.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2).

EDIT: As of version 2.0.1, the Development Status information is only fetched when you access the About pane in the preferences. So if you don't want this connection to happen (which is harmless, as I have explained) you simply have to not go to the About pane.

I'm glad you like the add-on!

That "phone home" you refer to is an API, it only fetches the current state of development for the about pane in the add-on's preferences. It's true I could add an option to disable it, but there is absolutely no data uploaded, it only fetches an url in the same way you would type it in the address bar. That url returns a text document with the "hours" that are put into the little development box.

Because of this I didn't feel it was necessary to purchase an SSL package (I'm on a budget here, so the hosting package I'm using is very basic), since there is absolutely no personal data carried. An HTTPS connection would only put extra weight into the server and into the connection (and into my wallet) for just fetching a number.

Still you're right that it's useless to do this when you just want to open the preferences. I will make it so this data is only fetched when you open the "About" pane specifically, since that's what the fetched info is used for. That should be enough I believe. Although, like I said, it's harmless and very light (about 1kb transfer). You can confirm it yourself if you want, this is the url the add-on calls:

Also, it is signed. The ".1-signed" suffix was added to already existing versions at the time a mass-signing event happened, to differentiate them from their unsigned equivalent versions. All versions uploaded (and reviewed!) after that, like the current version 2, are automatically signed so they don't have or need the signed suffix.

I love this Add-on, but this update niggles me for one reason; instead of Find All being under my Find Bar I have to click a button and a new "Window" appears. I use fullscreen so this is very inconvenient.

Would it be possible to change it back to how it was?

Edit: just read the patch notes; I will be going back to 1.4.18 until this more intuitive Find All feature is implemented.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2).

As you noticed, I am planning to rewrite the Find All lists into the window again as a sidebar that will be easier to use and less obtrusive than before.

It is your choice to go back a version of course, although you're likely to run into many existing bugs with it, so I don't really recommend it as I also can't give you an exact release date for the reworked Find All lists.

FindBar is a life saver for me. I won't upgrade to newer versions of Firefox until this add-on is updated to work with them because I refuse to have a find bar I can't open and close myself using just the keyboard. I need to do that both when I'm searching manually (I don't want to have to use my mouse) as well as when I'm running macros I've written in AutoHotKey.

Version 2 has just (finally) been released, so at least on the add-on's part it should be safe to update now. :)
