Ficmarks — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 September 2026
Ficmarks collects nothing, transmits nothing, and has no server. Everything the
extension records stays inside your own browser profile.
WHAT IS STORED
When you mark a work, Ficmarks writes a row into your browser's local IndexedDB
database, owned by the extension. A row holds:
- the AO3 work id, and the work's title and author as shown on the page
- your status for it: reading, read, or skip
- the chapter number and chapter id you last saved
- your own 1-5 star rating, if you set one
- timestamps used to merge changes if you import a file from another browser
Your settings (four on/off toggles) are stored in the browser's extension
settings area. Nothing else is stored.
WHERE IT GOES
Nowhere. The extension contains no network code — no fetch, no XMLHttpRequest,
no WebSocket, no analytics library, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no
advertising or tracking identifiers. There is no account, no sign-in, and no
backend service to send anything to. The source is auditable on this point.
WHY IT NEEDS ACCESS TO ARCHIVEOFOUROWN.ORG
The extension runs only on https://archiveofourown.org/*, and only to read the
page you already have open — the work id, title, author and chapter count that
AO3 has already rendered — and to draw its own marks and buttons onto it. It
never sends requests to AO3 on your behalf, never signs in for you, never
touches your AO3 account, and does not read or store your AO3 password, email,
bookmarks, history, or any other account data.
YOUR DATA IS YOURS
- Export in the toolbar popup writes your marks to a JSON file you choose the
location of.
- Import merges such a file back in.
- Removing the extension deletes its database along with it. Your browser's own
"clear site data" controls also apply.
CHILDREN
Ficmarks is not directed at children and collects no personal information from
anyone, of any age.
CHANGES
If a future version ever adds an optional feature that does transmit data — for
example, syncing your marks between your own devices — it will be opt-in, off by
default, announced in the release notes, and this page will be updated before
that version ships. Silent changes will not happen.
CONTACT
There is no account and no server, so there is nothing stored anywhere else to
request the deletion of: removing the extension deletes its local database along
with it. Questions can be left as a review on this add-on's page.
Ficmarks is an independent extension. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or
operated by the Organization for Transformative Works or Archive of Our Own.
