Stare at the black cross, and after a short time you will see green dots flashing across the screen, yet there is no green in this design. When the pink dot turns off, our eyes fill in the missing FF00FF (magenta) color with the opposite/complementary 00FF00 (green) color. Stare at a blank screen afterwards and you will see a row of all green dots. Here is how this phenomenon works: The eye's photoreceptors become biochemically depleted or desensitized from the continual stimulation to everything except green (ie, blue & red), so when gray appears instead, the eyes are more sensitve to the green component and less sensitive to the red+blue (magenta) components of the gray containing all three colors in equal amounts (808080), so we see more green.
