Focus Gate helps reduce unintentional visits to distracting websites by adding deliberate friction between the user and the website.

Instead of allowing a distracting website to open immediately, Focus Gate introduces a 20-minute waiting period. This gives the user time to reconsider whether they actually want to access the website rather than opening it automatically out of habit.

How it works

Add the websites you want to restrict to Focus Gate.

When you try to open a restricted website, Focus Gate blocks access and starts a 20-minute waiting period. The website becomes available only after the timer reaches zero.

Once the waiting period is complete, the website opens and a 20-minute usage window begins.

During the usage window:

• A countdown shows how much time remains.
• The timer can be moved to a convenient position on the webpage.
• Opening the same website in another tab does not create additional time.
• All tabs for the same website share the same usage window.
• When the usage time expires, access is restricted again.

The purpose is not to permanently block websites. Instead, Focus Gate introduces intentional friction before accessing websites that you tend to open automatically or without consciously deciding to do so.

The 20-minute waiting period creates a deliberate pause between the impulse to open a distracting website and actually accessing it.

Restriction controls

Focus Gate also makes changing restrictions deliberate. Disabling or editing restrictions requires a 30-minute waiting period before those changes can be made.

Focus Gate operates locally in the browser and does not require an external account or additional service.
