Save web pages as references, organize them into reference sets, and send them to your WordPress site to cite in your articles. CiteKit detects DOI, PMID, ISBN and page metadata, so you never retype a source.

1. Save sources as you research
   Click CiteKit on an article, journal paper, PubMed record, news story, book page or any web page. CiteKit detects the authors, title, publication, date and identifiers. Text you highlight before clicking is kept as the source's passage, and you can add a note. Save it to your library, or straight into the reference set for the article you're writing.

If a source is already in your library, CiteKit tells you where instead of saving a duplicate.

1. Keep one reference set per article
   Each reference set is a numbered list of the sources for one article. Switch between sets when you're researching several articles at once. Every reference has its own id and a ready-made shortcode, [cite id="…"], that you can copy into your draft.

The library page opens in a full tab. There you can see every reference and set, edit details, reorder sets, and remove references.

1. Send references to WordPress
   Connect your WordPress site once with a code from the CiteKit Reference Manager plugin. Then send one reference, a whole reference set, or everything that isn't on your site yet. The CiteKit Reference Manager plugin turns the [cite] shortcodes in your posts into citations, footnotes and bibliographies.

After each send, CiteKit shows what your site did with every reference:

Created: added to your site.
Already on your site: matched by DOI, PMID or ISBN. Shortcodes you already copied keep working.
Id already in use: CiteKit shows both records side by side, so you can link them as the same source or give yours a new id.
Not accepted: with the reason, such as a journal article missing its journal name.

Back up and move your library
Export your whole library as a CiteKit backup, or a reference set as CSL-JSON, a format other reference managers and the CiteKit WordPress plugin can import. Import a backup or CSL-JSON file at any time.

What CiteKit detects

DOI, PMID, PMCID, ISBN, ISSN and arXiv IDs
Scholarly citation metadata used by publishers and academic indexes
Schema.org structured data, Dublin Core, Open Graph and COinS
Authors, publication, volume, issue, pages and publication date

CiteKit takes identifiers only from the page's own metadata or address. A DOI or ISBN from a link or reference list is never mistaken for the page itself.
