Extemplary ("the extension," "we," "our") is a browser-based practice tool for NSDA Extemporaneous Speaking. This policy explains what data the extension collects, how it's used, and what choices you have.
Extemplary does not require you to create an account with an email or password. Instead, it automatically signs you into an anonymous, device-specific account so your practice history can be saved and retrieved. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
When you first use the extension, it creates an anonymous session with our backend provider, Supabase, and receives a randomly generated user ID. This ID is not linked to your name, email address, or any other real-world identity, and no sign-up form is ever shown. This ID is stored locally by the extension so it can reconnect you to your saved data on future visits.
When you complete a practice round (Regular Practice, Rapid Drill: Intro, Rapid Drill: Body, or Rough Draft), we store:
- The practice question and your response (either a video/audio recording, or, in Rough Draft mode, the plaintext you typed)
- The transcript generated from your recording (for video/audio modes)
- The AI-generated ballot feedback, scores, and rank
- Annotations/inline comments generated from your transcript
- Delivery metrics computed from your recording (e.g., pace, volume, pitch variety, filler-word counts), where applicable
- The practice mode and round number
Video/audio recordings are uploaded to a private cloud storage bucket associated with your anonymous account. Video/audio is never stored on our servers if you use Rough Draft mode, since that mode only involves typed text.
If you use the built-in practice calendar or goal-setting features, we store the events, goals, and notes you create (e.g., event dates, titles, and any notes you write) under your anonymous account.
We track how many times per day you use rate-limited features (e.g., Ballot Feedback, Citation Checker, Practice Question Generator, Current Events Summary) in order to enforce fair-use daily limits. This is stored as a count per category per day, tied to your anonymous account, not the content of your requests.
For Regular Practice, Rapid Drill: Intro, and Rapid Drill: Body modes, the extension requests access to your device's camera and microphone (or screen/tab capture, if you choose that option) solely to record your practice speech. This access is requested directly by your browser and only occurs when you choose to record; the resulting recording is handled as described in Section 2.2.
We do not collect your name, email address, physical address, phone number, payment information, precise geolocation, or browsing history outside the extension. We do not use tracking pixels, third-party advertising cookies, or analytics SDKs that build advertising profiles.
We use the data described above only to:
- Generate AI feedback ("ballots") on your practice speeches or rough drafts
- Save and display your practice history, trends, and goal progress ("My Ballot History")
- Let you review, revisit, or delete past practice rounds
- Enforce daily usage limits so the service remains available to all users
- Diagnose and fix technical problems with the extension
We do not use your practice content to build user profiles for advertising, and we do not sell or rent your data to third parties.
To generate feedback, Extemplary sends your transcript or typed rough draft (and, for question generation and current-events summaries, relevant prompts) to third-party AI model providers via our backend, including services offering access to models such as Llama, Claude, Kimi, DeepSeek, GLM, and Gemini. These providers process the content solely to return a response to your request and are bound by their own data-handling terms. We do not control, and are not responsible for, these third parties' independent data retention practices, but we do not authorize them to use your content to build public-facing consumer profiles.
Our backend infrastructure is hosted on Supabase, which stores your anonymous account data, practice history, and recordings on our behalf, and provides the authentication, database, and file-storage services described above.
Your practice data is stored in a private database and storage bucket associated with your anonymous account ID. Access controls (row-level security) restrict each account to seeing only its own data. Recordings and feedback remain stored until you delete them or request deletion (see Section 7).
Extemplary is intended for use by students, including those under 18, practicing for speech and debate competitions. We do not knowingly collect personal information such as names or contact details from any user, and account creation does not require any personal information. If you are a parent or guardian with concerns about a student's use of this extension, please contact us using the information in Section 9.
- Deleting practice history: You can delete individual ballots, recordings, calendar events, and goals directly within the extension at any time; deletion removes the associated database row and, for recordings, the stored file.
- Clearing your account: Because your account is anonymous and tied to browser storage on your device, clearing your browser's local storage/site data for the extension will disconnect you from your existing anonymous account. If you would like all data associated with a specific anonymous account permanently deleted from our servers, contact us with your account details (Section 9) and we will delete it.
- Camera/microphone: You can decline or revoke camera/microphone permissions at any time through your browser settings; declining will prevent video/audio recording features from working, but Rough Draft mode (with only plaintext) will still function.
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this document.
