A Really Useful Add-on Waardering 5 van 5 sterren

An excellent add-on that works straight away when installed. After installing it I tried it on some text in an email I was writing and it worked; I did not have to do anything special to activate it.

I like this, for anyone struggling to activate/turn it on, head to

https://translate.google.com/

for a multiple line text box that you can click on, that brings up the dictionary option..

Works fine Waardering 5 van 5 sterren

This dictionary works fine, once you have turned it on. I think the bad reviews are from people who aren't actually using it, because they haven't followed the instructions and enabled it.

As well as British spellings, it seems to also have British words that often don't appear in American dictionaries at all - a big plus over some so-called "British" dictionaries.

This is the one I use. Waardering 5 van 5 sterren

Works perfectly. I always install this with Firefox. BTW, is there any way to add a whitelist?

You have to set the language manually Waardering 5 van 5 sterren

It's a shame you can't reply to reviews except as a dev.

This dictionary isn't "fake" and does recognise common variations between US and British spellings (color - colour, artifact - artefact). I'm looking at them now.

Indeed (to be thorough) I copied and pasted this whole list into a text box: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_spelling_variants
And it got the vast majority correct.

The problem is people not following the instruction in the description:

"To enable, right-click in a multi-line text box, select "Languages", then "English / United Kingdom"."

If you don't do this Firefox will default to US English even if you have British English installed. I suppose this isn't the most obvious way of doing things. It would be better if Firefox asked upon installing a new dictionary which to use as default.

However, it does correctly recognise most common British spellings if it is set up correctly.

This dictionary is a fake Waardering 1 van 5 sterren

It isn't a British English dictionary; it's an American English dictionary with the "British" label slapped upon it. Examples:

It regards "humor" as correct and "humour" as incorrect. Those should be the other way around.

It knows "license" (verb) but not "licence" (noun).

It knows "artifact" but not "artefact"; both are valid in British English, and many Brits prefer the latter.

Dictionary needs to be activated

You haven't activated the correct dictionary, as all the words you've listed are part of this dictionary (see links below).

Could be a lot better Waardering 3 van 5 sterren

This only works for basic spelling mistakes. More often than not if i don't know how to spell a word the spell check won't be helping me at all and ill end up having to use google.

Please bump up compatibility to work with Aurora (29.0a2). Waardering 3 van 5 sterren

It'd be good to see this bumped up to be marked as compatible with Aurora and the Nightlies. Seems silly that it isn't. I'm using it right now (forced it), and it works fine on Aurora (29.0a2).

Edit: Originally gave it one star, but felt that seeing it works fine despite compatibility issue, I'll give it three. I can't give it five until compatibility issue has been resolved, though.

Excellent dictionary.

For those of you complaining about -ize, read this:
http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2011/03/ize-or-ise/

It's not an Americanism, and the spelling actually pre-dates the founding of the United States!

Organisation! NOT Organization. Waardering 5 van 5 sterren

Yes adding to the previous poster, it's ORGANISATION not ORGANIZATION. Native english speaker living in Britain for all of my 40 years of life, and if you use a Z in -sation words here and they'll look at you funny as a Yank, or as a midatlantic wannabe. A few companies standardise (Not standardize btw) on US English to make the Americans feel at home, but that doesn't mean it's common outside of that business, or acceptable - or even taught like that at school. Whatever the OED may say.

According to Wikipedia this is their own variant, Oxford spelling. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_spelling but that does not make it common, only in some areas as detailed there. Yes organize might be understood, and is a variant, but the common version here is organise.

When is English not English? Waardering 4 van 5 sterren

Strange review by GeoffreyD who said that "organization" in UK English is the correct spelling - not "organisation". However although the Oxford English Dictionary is the most recognised and accepted authority, is it not the correct British English spelling - "organisation" is and is generally accepted in the UK as being the correct spelling. From Wikipedia:"American spelling avoids -ise endings in words like organize, realize and recognize. British spelling mostly uses -ise, while -ize is also used (organise/organize, realise/realize, recognise/recognize) the ratio between -ise and -ize stands at 3:2 in the British National Corpus."The point is, the use of -ise is NOT incorrect and is not an error.

Waardering 4 van 5 sterren

Be really careful about English dictionaries that seem to be specific to a country or region. Lots of errors can be made. For example, many people think that 'organisation' is British English and 'organization' is US English. This is not correct - authentic British English is 'organization' - and if you don't believe me check the Oxford English Dictionary. There are many such anomalies is supposed country specific English dictionaries.

lovely, GB Spellchecker and no US to bother Waardering 5 van 5 sterren

I installed my localised version of Aurora in Dutch... and now I can install a proper English dictionary without the US one. Mind you, I have nothing against the US nor it's English, but I just hate having a dozen or more dictionaries installed that I never use. BTW, just installed it and it's working without restarting !!! Aurora is awesome!
BTW2: This is FF 24, this plugin is NOT meant for Aurora but it works like a charm ;)

Not available for Firefox 24.0 Waardering 4 van 5 sterren

I want to install the British English dictionary for the latest version of FF, but it says that it is not available for firefox 24.0, which means I can't use it. Could you look into the issue please?

PS I'm not on the stable FF release channel, I switch between Aurora and Nightly builds.

Installs OK but the first spell check i did lists the word movie as a spelling error !!!

Updated 03.06.13

Thanks for your very quick feedback and explanation. Just seems weird as it is not a word i normally associate as a problem. Anyway have added to dictionary now so all is well. Thanks for the great work .

Deze beoordeling betreft een eerdere versie van de add-on (1.19.3).

I didn't write the dictionary's word-list, but according to the OED "movie" is chiefly North American. So it shouldn't come as a complete surprise that it isn't part of a British English dictionary.
