I didn't like Firefox updating my add-ons without my knowledge, so I turned off add-on updates, but I still wanted to be notified of new versions. So I wrote this extension. Things to know: if you change options while in the 'checking' or 'found update' states, the icon will be grey until the next check/restart. The add-on does not know anything about the built in Add-on version checker. In other words, Firefox may check for updates and find one, but the icon for this add-on won't change until the next time the add-on checks. Because of that, this add-on sets "extensions.update.autoUpdateDefault" to false stopping built in updates, but since it has it's own timer that shouldn't be a problem. Starting with version 2.0, If you uninstall/disable this add-on and want to change it back to built in default, you can get select 'OK' on the prompt, 'Cancel' to leave automatic checking off. If you want to make the built-in add-on manager to not check for updates at all, set 'extensions.update.enabled' to false in about:config. This extension does not do that, since setting auto update to false stops the updates from being applied. This option was removed from the Firefox options interface.
Version 2.5 has new icons. This is for support of Firefox's new Australis theme that should land in version 29 or 30.
Replaced occurrences of depreciated 'Application.restart()' with 'Cc["@mozilla.org/toolkit/app-startup;1"].getService(Ci.nsIAppStartup).quit(Ci.nsIAppStartup.eAttemptQuit | Ci.nsIAppStartup.eRestart)'.
