Most 5-star ratings are from people who registered exclusively to praise this add-on multiple times. Clearly fake reviews!
Look at this, for example (there are others): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/user/Romeu_Martins10/
What happened to this developer? Is he going mad, or what?
I had used Menu Editor for years, but it has been abandoned. I'm glad I found this one. It's not only a nice replacement, it's even better! Thank you very much!
Only one issue: Every time I open FF, the first time I right-click anywhere in order to use the contextual menu, the contextual menu takes a bit long to load. This happens only the first time of a right-click, after opening FF. Is this behavior normal?
When search auto selection is enabled, when I right-click on the selected text in a search field to search for it again using the command "Search for...", the text gets unselected and the search engine searches nothing (because no text was selected).
Also, the tab hovering thing is very nice, but can be annoying too. It would be better, one could set a delay, like 1 sec., to avoid changing to a tab by accident, like when moving the pointer up to the URL bar.
Nice would be also an auto drop down for bookmark folders on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
Edit: Thank you for your reply!
I think the developer couldn't imagine he would receive so much negative feedback. I think also he doesn't know how to communicate things properly. It's just inconceivable that just because of FF 36 the whole software had to be completely rewritten from scratch! No other add-on has had to be rewritten because of FF 36. So why only VDH? He doesn't give any reason for the COMPLETE REWRITE.
It's clear he WANTED to make a brand new software. That's the reason, and it's his right, but it's also just plain naive. Sorry!
Look at Adobe Photoshop, for example. It has NEVER been rewritten. Ever! Only improved.
And if a developer really wants to completely rewrite an add-on, why in Jesus' name take out functionalities that were present in the older versions? It's obvious there is NO WAY people will like it!
Normally, a new UI means a software became cleaner, more intuitive, easier to use. If the developer is reading the reviews he'll have to notice this is simply not the case with his "new" add-on.
Reply to developer's reply: Thank you, developer! But since no other add-on I use has been COMPLETELY rewritten because of FF 36 (including other video downloaders), it's just a bit hard to believe a COMPLETE rewrite of VDH was really necessary. It's just my opinion. And if it was, it doesn't mean the new interface is better (as you can see, many people are saying it's not). Thank you.
I use it for downloading videos from different sites. I don't give it 5 stars only because it doesn't rename the videos according to their titles, making it clean, like other downloaders add-ons do. Video files are downloaded with their original file names, which are often very long and strange.
Is there a way to change this? Thanks.
Thank you for this!
It works well, but when you download more than one video that have the same title, DFV adds a (1), (2), etc. to the file EXTENSION!!! [like "Example.mp4 (1)", "Example.mp4 (2)"].
So I have to remove those numbers in order to be able to open the videos.
It should be "Example (1).mp4", "Example (2).mp4"
As much as I am THANKFUL for this add-on, I'm sorry, but this new version 5 is a step back, unfortunately.
Yes, VDH detects videos on more sites than other add-ons, but version 5 is even less intuitive, and much, much uglier!
Changing settings is now more painful. Some functions are not explained (I don't know what a Jocly presentation is, or an adaptive or nth variant, for example).
It has lost some functionalities too: no more audio only downloads (MP3) and no more right-click on a video link to download it.
Also, it now consumes more CPU from my Macbook Pro (fans get louder with this new version 5).
It's a fact that most software that are completely rewritten often get worse. The best applications are those who remain basically the same, just being improved over time.
Unfortunately, this add-on doesn't work very well with Apple's TextEdit, because some UTF-8 characters get corrupted.
It works much better with TextMate. But TextMate is a more complex text editor. If you don't know it, it will take a bit of time to set it up so it behaves like TextEdit, but then it will work fine with this add-on.
1) It works with many sites, not only Youtube.
2) You can open the downloading file in your desktop video player and start watching it right away, don't have to wait for download to complete.
1) On Youtube it has problems with playlists (doesn't always recognize videos).
2) Downloads MUCH slower than "Download YouTube Videos as MP4", for ex.
3) Bloated with too many functions you don't really need.
4) Not very intuitive.
Very good! Thanks for this! But, unfortunately when you pause a download, it will start downloading from the beginning again, when you want to resume it. I was downloading a large video from Youtube and paused it short before it was completed, losing what was already downloaded.
Very good, BUT: You cannot start watching the video in a video player while file is being downloaded. You must wait until file download is complete. With DownloadHelper it's possible to watch an incomplete file straight away, you don't have to wait. Thank you for this, but must the icon (button) be so ugly?Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (33.0.1-signed) del componente aggiuntivo.
I liked Pocket and used it for many years, without having an account, but now it requires (forces) users to have an online account and you must be logged in, in order to be able to use Pocket.
I don't like that. So I changed to Save-To-Read ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/save-to-read/ ). It's basically the same, but it stores links locally only, no need to be logged in somewhere.
I switched to this after Pocket doesn't allow anymore to save links locally. You have to have an online account. I don't like that. This add-on does the same, but save links locally only, and that's how it should be, at least for me.
OK, it's not as elegant as Pocket but it does the same. It would be nice if I could make the floating panel a bit longer, to see more links at once without having to scroll, but it's really not a problem.
I was able to use Pocket without having an account. It saved my links locally. Today I reinstalled it and now I must sing in. What happened? Can't I use it anymore without having an account and being logged in? I'm sorry, but I really liked that feature!Questa recensione riguarda una versione precedente (22.214.171.124-signed) del componente aggiuntivo. Thanks for this! It's the best, because it automatically remembers highlighted texts without additional click. Other add-ons require you to save the highlighted text passages, which is very annoying.
Only small problem is it puts 4 buttons on your toolbar. But I'm sure developer will improve this. I use the status bar and dragged them there, where they are smaller and don't bother me.
Thanks for this!
I have set up everything to open in new tabs, but when I click the home page button, it opens in the same tab. How can I make the home page open in a new tab as well?
Edit: I have to register in your forum just for that * ONE * question?!? OK, then I tried to register and I couldn't because my IP was blocked because I allegedly am a spammer! This is crazy! No, thanks...
Why is this not being developed anymore? It's sooooo useful!!!
Please, update it, so I can give it 5 stars. Thank you.
Very useful!!! Thank you!
But if you, like me, use search engines in languages that have accents, like Portuguese, some engines may not find the words you search for, because of the wrong character encoding. In this case, try this:
After the page of a dictionary is opened, under Firefox menu "View" change the character encoding of the page to UTF-8. Only THEN (!) add the search engine to the search bar. That way the engine will be created with UTF-8 encoding and words with accents will be found.
