Works well but has a few shortcomings Rated 3 out of 5 stars

[EDIT: since there is no way to reply to comments, I'm adding this paragraph to address Steeev's reply]
Steeev, if you feel bullied I'm sorry, as this was clearly not my intention. In fact I have no problems with how your extension works and I clearly state it as the first thing. Nevertheless, I think there are some shortcomings and possible improvements, which I tried to motivate and address in a constructive manner, proposing solutions. I'm sorry that you don't appreciate constructive criticism, especially from someone who offered to help out. Your attitude doesn't help either.

While this add-on is well done and maintained, it could definitely benefit from a few changes.

First of all, it's not developer-friendly. While it's a big add-on, it's basically a one-man show. When I asked the developer if it was available on github or a similar platform with a free license to give some contributions, I was answered that the only way to help is manually unpacking the source, modifying it and sending patches.
This killed my motivation, and I guess the motivation of many other potential contributors. Some features, like for example HD screen support, are not being developed because the main dev doesn't have the right device to test them.

Another problem is the lack of updates here on mozilla.org, which means that it has to be done manually every single time. It's a small annoyance, but it brings more: updates are not signed or checked in any way, and an additional domain has to be allowed to install add-ons. This increases the potential of security breaches, and given the add-on scope, an attack could lead to the exposure or sensitive data. The fact that the code is opaque (in the sense of not easily accessible, see the previous point) doesn't help in trusting it.

Last but not least, it does not work in Firefox Developer Edition, which is for many people a common platform. While this is a minor remark, it certainly doesn't help to involve other developers, in contributing and maintaining F.B. Purity.

With relatively little work this add-on could easily be a gem.

This is a bizarre review, its my right to develop my extension anyway i like, you can't bully me into changing it by leaving a poor review. also i did not say the only way to help develop it was to unpack the source, i said you can access the source code by downloading the greasemonkey script, which the ff extension is based on. The code *is* easily accessible as I already stated, and can easily be checked. Why are you telling me that it does not work on Firefox Developer Edition here? It is clearly stated in the FBP FAQ that I cannot support Dev / Beta / Alpha versions of browsers.

If you want to help my out by developing HD screen support, i dont see how hard that could be, you dont even need to access the source code of the script, as its just CSS code, which can easily be placed in the Custom CSS box.

The lack of updates on mozilla is due to mozillas policy of making it extra hard for developers to do anything, on here. They expect me to rewrite a great deal of the extension for no real gain, and then the manual review process is ridiculously long and drawn out, which makes releasing a multi platform cross browser extension extremely difficult. if they would only change to a system like on the chrome webstore, it would make things much easier.

Like they said Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Get it. It works. Period. Makes FB a much less annoying experience. Didn't really want to have to write a review here, but needed to in order to give this 5 stars. Too bad Firefox feels the need to introduce FB overcomplicatedness into their experience also.

Lots of customization options for Facebook Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Loads of different customization options for every page and feature of Facebook; if anything there are almost too many options and while effort has obliviously been made to sort the options into sub-sections it sometimes can take a while to find the change you want. That said, when you do find it, most changes just require a simple checkbox or drop-down - nothing complicated.

The only thing to watch out for, as has already been mentioned, adding this extension via addons.mozilla.org website doesn't seem to work - you need to go and visit the official plug-in webpage and install though that.

Best Facebook experience ever! It cleans up the ads and unwanted junk and makes FB work MUCH smoother and faster! Awesome add-on!

"Bureaucratic" is good in some cases ... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

... and this is one of them. At present I don't know you from Jack and I don't take chances. Yes, you have a great reputation, but when the only way I can get a working version of your add-on is to get it from somewhere other than here, I'm concerned. Even if I have no question about your integrity, I don't know if the server it's on is secure, and so on. Avoiding a possible disaster is more important to me than convenience.

Of course you have a job which most likely takes well over 40 hours/week of your time and energy. Working on an app (a good one) is more than laudable. Donations will most likely not be sufficient to replace the need of having a job, but ... it might not hurt to let those who use the app know that you need a least a small donation to have the motivation to continue (midnight pizza?). If Wikipedia (and others) can get away with that and you have enthusiastic followers, at least give it a try.

I finally got fed up with something that happens on FB to the extent that I took the time to google the issue and subsequently read about your add-on in some random forum; I then followed the link and was taken to the location you most likely reference. Immediate reaction: I went (instead) to addons.mozilla.org, was thrilled to find your app, installed it, and although it shows as being functional, I have yet to find a way to fire it up. I just want the ability to make FB stick with "most recent" sorting in my timeline. I *hate* having to change it every time I go to FB (and I'm only on FB when I'm actively interacting with it). If (as it appears) there are other benefits your add-on provides which improve the FB experience, I'll be thrilled, maybe donate. :-)

I have donated to big organizations like Mozilla and LibreOffice, to the makers of freeware apps (and it's exciting to see the app become popular enough that there's a point where from version X onward you have to pay for it--if it's really that good). I've donated to a very small # of Mozilla add-on developers because there are only a few I've stuck with. Most have, over time, fallen apart for one reason or another. Writing this missive and forcing myself to think about this has me making a couple donations next.

Anyway, my post is clearly too long. I wish you the best, I just thought I'd take the time to say, hey, I really wanted to try out your add-on but if I can't get it from the definitive authority on safety and function, it's not going to happen.

I understand your concerns, However Google Chrome's extension system doesn't require the same bureaucracy to publish new extensions and that system seems to be working fine to me and them.

I submitted an updated version of the FBP extension here back in november, it has been in the bureaucratic review system for over 2 months now, and in that time I must have released at least 10 or more updates to the extension, however Mozilla's update system is so broken, if I had actually uploaded those new versions here each time I changed the extension, it would push my extension to the back of the review queue each time. The number of times the extension needs to be updated to be kept working is due to the constant changes Facebook make to their pages. Unfortunately Mozilla's extension update system on this site is not compatible with rapidly changing extensions such as FBP, and probably one of the reasons Chrome is now much more popular than Firefox.

To wait 2 months for Mozilla to officially review an extension update is a bit of a joke really, when updating an extension on the official Chrome extension site usually takes under an hour.

The FBPURITY.COM site is the definitive authority on FB PURITY and if you don't trust that, or the fact that FB Purity has been in development since March 2009 or the multitude of 5 star reviews on this site and the other official extension sites for the other supported browsers or the reviews in the International press such as The Washington Post and CNET then I guess, yes, you can always just wait for Mozilla to pull their finger out and modernise their extension update/review system.

The ridiculous thing about this, is even after the current "new" (though already outdated) version that i have uploaded here gets reviewed, i will immediately need to upload the actual latest version of FBP, (after painstakingly modifying it to make sure it complies with their often pointless bureaucratic standards) and then the whole bureaucratic waiting process begins again, and maybe it will take another 2 months before that version gets officially rolled out on this site, meanwhile Facebook are updating their code on their site daily breaking stuff in my extension.

I've used this before but it's stopped working in FireFox. It works just great on my Chrome browser. That's annoying. I use Firefox 98% of the time but if I need to use Facebook, I have to go to Chrome. I love F.B Purity, I just wish it worked in FireFox again.

YEAH!. It works! Thanks so much. Who reads descriptions when you already know F.B. Purity works like a charm? Thanks so much for pointing it out.

It sounds like you are talking about the version of the addon from this site.

The version of the firefox add-on on this site is out of date now and will not work correctly, if you want the latest working version of FBP for firefox, you need to install it via http://install.fbpurity.com

This is mentioned in the add-on's description.

What's really needed is a non-commercial, open source "Facebook." Until that happens this is the best alternative. It is VERY good. VERY helpful. VERY useful.

This nice app used to work and I loved it. The author used to try to keep up with Facebook's attempts to shut it down or just make it so it wouldn't work. Wonderful!

UPDATE: The author points out that Firefox updates for FBPurity are out of date. Its funny, but the Firefox older version actually works good. When I use the new versions from the FBP site, it doesn't work at all. I'll keep an eye on future FBP updates and keep trying them until one works, but for now version 9.3 is working great!!

You are mistaken, the add-on is being kept up to date. Please update your review.

You are mistaken, please read the extension's description, it is indeed being kept up to date, you just need to install it via the extension's website at http://fbpurity.com

Please update your review, to reflect this fact, thanks.
