ChineseDict – Chinese–English Dictionary Autor: ChineseDict

Hold Shift and point at a Chinese word on any web page. A small card shows the word, its pinyin with tone colours, the English meanings, the traditional form and the HSK level. A link opens the full entry on chinesedict.com.

What is in it
- 120,872 entries, all stored inside the extension. Looking a word up does not use the network.
- Longest match from the character under the pointer: 北京大学 is one word, not 北京 + 大学, even when the page splits it across styles.
- Traditional characters are looked up too: 學習 shows 学习.
- Words with more than one reading show each one, up to three: 行 shows xíng and háng.
- Female and male recordings of each reading. They play on sites with a strict Content Security Policy, such as GitHub, because the extension plays the audio itself instead of the page.
- The first lookup of a character takes 2 to 4 ms; after that, under 0.1 ms (measured in Chrome).

Settings
- Hold Shift + hover, or hover only
- Popup delay: 150, 300, 500 or 800 ms
- Light, dark or system theme; three text sizes
- Turn lookup off for one site, or everywhere

Where it does not work
Browser pages and extension stores, the PDF viewer built into the browser, text drawn on a canvas (Google Docs), text in images, and text inside input boxes.

Privacy
No account. The extension does not collect or send what you read; settings stay in your browser. The only request it makes is for a recording on cdn.chinesedict.com, when you press a play button.
