Good extension combined with Readability extension
Was looking for a replacement for PrintWhatYouLike since it does not work with Firefox 18. So I tried Print Edit. I noticed that sometimes when I click on an ad and then delete it, nearly the entire article is deleted, not just the ad. But I really wanted Print Edit to save the web pages rather than print them. However when I did a "Save As" I found that the original web page was saved to a file. All of the ads and other crap I had edited out and deleted was there in the saved file, so it was just a waste of time to do the deletions.
With Version 12.0, when saving an edited web page to an HTML/MAFF/MHT file, it is now possible to purge unwanted elements in order to reduce the file size. There are options to select which elements to purge: deleted elements, hidden images, scripts, style sheets. The initial settings are to purge deleted elements and hidden images.
The 'Save' command can save the edited web page in several different methods:
- Firefox's save methods: 'Web Page Complete' (.htm + folder), 'Web Page HTML Only' (.htm) or 'Text Files' (.txt)
- Mozilla Archive Format (MAF) save methods: 'Web Archive MAFF' (.maff) or 'Web Archive MHTML' (.mht)
- UnMHT save methods: 'Web Archive' (.mht)
Most of these methods save the entire web page including the CSS styling applied by Print Edit. For these methods, if the saved web page is opened in a browser, it will be displayed exactly as it was when it was last edited with all the edits still applied.
However, the 'Web Page HTML Only' and 'Text Files' methods do not save the CSS styling applied by Print Edit (or any of the web page's original CSS styling). If the saved web page is opened in a browser, it will not look like the edited web page (and probably will not look like the original web page).
To use the MAF save methods, the MAF add-on must be installed. To use the UnMHT methods, both the MAF add-on and the UnMHT add-on must be installed.
This add-on is just perfect for me. Just can the font size limit be set at higher level, like 30? Currently 20 is a bit not enough for me. Thanks~
The maximum font size has been increased to 30px in Print Edit 9.0.
After highlighting the print area, press preview and whole page show up instead of the selected area.
** Receive an email from the author and it works great now. I didn't know that I have to click the "delete except". Thanks Dave for your help.
This has been an invaluable add on. However since Firefox 17 it has been disabled by Mozilla. With FF18.0.1 it remains disabled. Bummer.
Compatibility of Print Edit 8.9 has been updated to Firefox 18.*.
Download Print Edit 8.9 again from the Mozilla Add-ons site and everything should be fine.
I love this add-on. I have some ideas for improvement, but they may not be possible. If the improvements are not technically possible, then it gets 5 stars already.
Complex layouts can require a lot of detailed edits, and it does not allow as much control as I want. It would be very nice if text or graphics within the blocks of space could be deleted or edited. The blocks of space on the original page often claim much more width than is needed after unnecessary elements are deleted, but the layout cannot be adjusted. In this regard, one can highlight the required parts and choose "Delete Except," yet the original page width remains and preserves too much margin, usually on the right side. I used it for a while without finding the Save As control; maybe that could be made into a button on the toolbar?
With regards to your suggested improvements:
- Print Edit is not really designed for making detailed edits to complex layouts. It may be possible to delete smaller pieces of text using the 'Text Pieces' feature. To remove graphics, that cannot be selected using the highlight (red) box, try selecting around the graphics using the draggable capture (blue) box.
- In Print Edit 9.0, the 'Delete Except' drop-down menu has two new menu items, 'Restricted Without Margins' and 'Unrestricted Without Margins', which remove the margins from the selected elements. These new menu items are designed to solve the problem that you and other users have reported.
- In Print Edit 9.0, the 'Save As' and 'Options' menu items have been moved to become buttons on the Print Edit toolbar.
Really good addon. Perfect for anyone who needs to print sections of pages.
You can edit, but a print preview then removes all editing.
When this addon works it's brilliant!
Please provide more information about this problem to assist investigation.
Which operating system (Windows, Linux or Mac OS X) are you using? Does this problem happen every time you try to edit/preview a web page? If it only happen with certain web pages, please provide a link to a web page that causes the problem.
Does the problem still happen if you install Print Edit 8.6 instead of Print Edit 8.9? You can download Print Edit 8.6 from: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/print-edit/versions.

A fabulous extension with unfortunately one major flaw. It is not compatible with any firefox themes that use a dark template. Basically the text in the editor is in black font regardless of the background colour. I always use a dark theme because I find it easier to read and in my opinion, it just looks better. As such, I have to leave this extension disabled which is a nuisance (only re-enabling in 'emergencies' where I'll temporarily revert the theme to default).
Very sorry! This does work with my current theme LavaFox V2. It must have been fixed in one of the updates. I'm sure I've tried to use it many times in the past and couldn't see the button text, so just assumed nothing had changed since. Apologies!
I changed my rating to 5 stars as deserved. :)
This issue was fixed in Print Edit 8.9.
The styling of the Edit toolbar now changes to match the applied theme. The styling of the Format and Inspect panel headers now blend in with the applied theme.
Great extension for cleaning up printouts! Thunderbird compatibility DEFINITELY Needed!
Installing it in my Traditional Chinese Firefox, "Print Edit" displays the Simplify Chinese and no way to change it.
Translation of Print Edit into other languages is done by volunteers using the BabelZilla website. So far, no-one has volunteered to translate Print Edit into Traditional Chinese. Print Edit has become another essential add-on. With some care, pages can be edited so that only what is needed is printed. Excellent work!
It's good add-on but the term "Edit" in its title says the half of true. You can delete/hide/reformat contents but you CANNOT *add* new elements, like text, images or whatever. (Unless, I couldn't find out how to do it, in which case I would appreciate any hint..)
I'm not a particularly advanced user, but after reading the reviews I decided to download Print Edit because I'm tired of copy/paste into Word. I decided to try it out by printing the accompanying instructions, and IT WORKED GREAT! Wow! Thanks for a great program - this is going to save me so much time and frustration!
I have been using this add-on for a while now and it is truly a valuable add-on (5 stars for this). Just noticed today that "Print Preview" is not working properly for multi-page content (the second page onwards are getting truncated). Hope that there is a fix in works.
This is a bug in Firefox 18.0a1, not in Print Edit. The problem still happens with File > Print Preview when Print Edit is removed..
Amazing!!!!!!! Been looking for something like this FOREVER!!! Now, I can delete all images from a page before printing. How COOL IZ that!!!
This is one of those add ons that makes you wonder how you did without it until it came along. Your printed document can now contain "just the facts" instead of adverts and clutter.
*wants to print a one-page tutorial from a blog entry*
*printer spews out half a rainforest because it decided I need all the comments as wel*
So, uhm... yeah. I use this add-on a LOT. Hehehe...
Awesome tool, especially when printing something from a blog or a forumpost and you dont need all the google ads, shiny signatures or avatar that will drain your cartridge dry.
I absolutely adore this add-on. I have to print many pages from the internet and this add-on saves me printing paper as I can just include the pertinent information I want.
One request to the developer... many older people want to print with bigger fonts on sites that use small fonts. It would be super nice if you could please change the maximum size for "Font Size" in the Format dialog to at least 16 instead of 12.
Does what it says and does it well!
I wish there was some way to re-assign the Ctrl+P shortcut to this extension instead of the regular Print.
