mote is a minimal Firefox extension for selection translation. Select text on any page, a purple mote appears, hover it, and a bubble streams a Chinese translation through your own OpenAI-compatible API.

No built-in engine and no vendor lock-in: set Base URL, API Key, and Model in Preferences. Works with OpenAI, local gateways, and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

How it works
1. Select text — a purple mote appears near the selection.
2. Hover the mote — a bubble expands and translation streams in.
3. Select or copy the translation freely.
4. Click elsewhere or press Esc to dismiss.

Privacy
mote does not collect analytics or personal data for the developer. Selected text is sent only to the API endpoint you configure, with your own key. Credentials stay in local extension storage.

Requirements
- Firefox 109+
- An OpenAI-compatible chat completions endpoint that supports streaming
