The idea for HornTracker came about from a few things, there were early log parsers that people had created to gather data but it had three major problems.
First, it suffered from statistical bias, more people would submit interesting logs rather than the mundane leading to inaccurate data samples.
Secondly, it was a hassle to remember to copy+paste your logs to be submitted.
Lastly, it relied on the user to remember, and be honest about their trap setup. Bad data can be a huge pain to sort out.
This all led me to the idea that this data could be extracted automatically via a browser extension and would solve all of those problems. A set it and forget it type extension that didn't care how boring your most recent hunt was.
I'd wanted to learn to write extensions and add-ons for the major browsers, so this was the perfect opportunity and on September 27th, 2010 HornTracker was released to the public for the first time.
There's three big things coming: A mobile Firefox add-on, a user profile page, and an updated data viewer.
