especially when you have around 20 add-ons that are fully customized giving me my personel FF interface
after a FF crash, I was back to browsing in less than a minute from the exact place I left off
thnx to all who created FEBE
My brand new SATA drive died and took almost everything with it. I did have the foresight to have FEBE store my Firefox settings on another drive. A 15 second restore and everything was like I'd never skipped a beat. Thank you Chuck. You and FEBE are a life saver.
I did a clean install of Win XP. Then I proceeded (or so I thought) to restore a full profile backup for firefox. I followed the instructions exactly but this extension did not work. I did an automatic and manual restore multiple times and neither of them were successful. All my extensions and themes appeared in the add-on window but none of them worked. If I clicked on any of the extension options the window would freeze. Also, the browser and button layouts were set to default. The only thing that was restored was the Bookmarks toolbar. Completely aggravating.
I thought this would be a nice program to do an easy automatic backup but it proved to be even more of a hassle. It would have been simpler if I had just made a copy of the profile folder in the Documents and Settings/User/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles folder but I decided to trust this program. Not going to make this mistake again!
The only remotely useful thing I could see for this program is saving the individual extensions for backup. Not a big deal.
It is best used to save all your extensions but to reload them, it is no easier than doing it manually (you have to select all the extensions). I got the password recover to work once in about 15 tries. I even tried manually via instructions and it didn't work. Had to go to another program. Everything is saved separately, you can't just reload everything at once.
A full profile backup/restore handles *everything* in your Firefox profile all at once. And you can install/restore your extensions/themes all at once by using the shift-click and ctrl-click methods of selection.
You could also use the drag-and-drop method described in the FEBE Faq: customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/febe/febeFAQ.html#A12
I use a large number of different machines in different sites, and the first thing I do, if they haven't installed it, is download and install Firefox. The next thing I do is use FEBE, together with CLEO, to install the extensions which make FF the comprehensive browser it can be.
Is there a chance of something similar for Thunderbird?
My firefox is pimped with more than 30 extensions, all crucial for me. The headache of having to reinstall firefox together with some 30+ addons and on top of that the Sisyphean work of configuring each single addon is unimaginable - a sure way to burn a day away. so I needed the sense of security that it would be possible to backup my whole firefox (all addons and all preferences). I gave FEBE a try at duplicating my firefox from my desktop pc to my laptop. There're quite a few people that wrote bad reviews so my expectations weren't high. At first try it only saved the installations for the extensions. after figuring out that I need to select the backup "full profile" in FEBE's options I managed to get FEBE to generate a single file that contained all my addons and all my preferences. so maybe this is where FEBE wasn't user friendly enough for some reviewers that gave it a low rating. FEBE works great you just need to know how to use it but you don't need to be a genius for that. afaik FEBE is the only extension that allows entire backup of firefox, it does the job without a flaw and for that it's a definite 10! mozilla should promote it in the main addons page since no other extension nor firefox itself offer the ability to backup what addons.mozilla.org so much promotes: the customization of your own firefox.
I found only 2 drawbacks. they weren't enough imo to affect the rank i gave FEBE but still, it'd be nice if the developer address them:
1) after installing FEBE 5.1.1 here in the mozilla website, i found that FEBE's website had a version a bit more advanced.
2) FEBE saved the firefox addons and preferences in a single .fbu file so i had to start>run firefox -p to get the profiles menu, create a 'temporary' profile and install febe there just so i could use febe to restore the saved .fbu file into the 'default' firefox profile. maybe it can be possible in future versions to make this process shorter or more automatic?
The bottom line is that FEBE is a must for anyone with more than 3 addons that are highly configurable - let alone someone like me with over 30. That's a great job done on this addon! Truly useful !!!
FEBE is fine for backing up your extensions, which it does extremely well. It is much (and I mean much) less good at restoring your user data. In particular, it seems utterly unable to restore usernames and passwords - I've tested it on three machines and get the same results on all of them. Use with extreme caution, and back up all your important login data via hand first...
Please see these two FEBE FAQ items:
Great ideal! Too bad it never works! Not user friendly no clear instructions. Scheduler never works. Can't manually initiate. Symantec Ghost & even bash (Linux...except for WLAN...) is easier to use. The bottom line is that something as simple as backing up browser extensions should be an easy task. There should be no need to read any info anything or visit a website site to look for instructions for such a basic task.
Instead of packaging all of my extensions into a big file, I would love to be able to automatically publish a list of my extensions (RSS, JSON, CSV, etc) to a web or FTP server. The list would have the version and URL (and/or UUID) of the extension. So someone else (including myself on another computer) could synchronize & install the same extensions.
I think it should be integrated into firefox
This extension works good.Backed up everything for me smoothly. But a "backup every time Firefox is closed" option should be there. Then it would become a total beauty and an install and forget extension.
Great work anyway.Kudos to the developer.
All configuration/settings and layout of buttons of installed addons are not preserved.
All it does is just install the addons, you previously installed.
A "Full profile" backup/restore does preserve your configuration/settings and layout of buttons. To backup/restore your extension settings individually, see the OPIE extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6152 - currently in sandbox)
too slow, and doesn't work as well as i had hoped
Backup ed and restored whole profile so easily, all I need from one backup addon, thx for making it
Muy completo y facil de usar. Le doy el diez, aun asi, sigue mejorandolo tu sabras que hacer, por ahora no le encuentro problemas =)
a must have for anyone with many must have addons. i'm a huge FF customizer and adore being able to take my configurations with me. also handy for transferring your home configs to your portable FF (runs on a thumbdrive so you dont have to install on someone else's comp)
if you have even one thing that you *have* to have in your firefox, get FEBE and make sure you can always get it!
I got a c:\ crash 1 month ago and I regret to not have found your addon before.
I tried it just this morning, it's great...
And the ability to add external data (personnal issues) is so good...
No big bug detected (5.1, FF2, XPsp2).
Just no rewriting bookmark.html when this one is already on the save folder. So I check the box "delete folder", and all is ok.
Very good job, and very clean in french.
Bonjour from France :-)
My security software is warning me of a tracking cookie titled Real, which is emitted by FEBE every morning. Do not use this extension if you carte about your privacy.
Many "reviewers" are either ignoring or failing to read the long description on the front page.
*** FEBE 6.0 for FX3 IS AVAILABLE AT ***
It is still in beta (testing) phase, but most things work. Instead of posting negative "reviews" complaining that FEBE is not available for Fx3 (when it is), it would be more productive to install and help test the pending version.
I will not release FEBE 6.0 to AMO until it thoroughly completes beta testing. The more testers I have, the quicker it will get released. I have an active support forum where users report bugs and offer suggestions:
Note: I hate it when a developer posts a review for his own extension. It is patronizing and unprofessional. Unfortunately, I feel I have little choice in this circumstance. Apparently, this is the only venue I have to inform some users of available upgrades (if they read this at all). I cannot post here without supplying a rating.
This is awesome!!! I think this is one of the "SOS Tools".
If you want help, I can translate the add-on to Portuguese just contact me and tell me what to do :)

This is just a splendid extension. However, when I perform a backup it doesn't close the progress window at all :( the green bar just moves faster when it's done (and the result window is shown)
I was in need of this utility since I installed my first theme and extension. I wanted to use the same extension or theme in the office that I had searched and found useful previously while working at home. I tried doing this by saving XPIs on a web page. But that was also very cumbersome.
This extension solves all such problems very nicely. Allowing saving of themes as well as extensions, cookies, passwords and more.
Fantastic. Migrated all of my stuff over nice and cleanly. I wish that I had known about this sooner. Thank you so much.
Chuck Baker, you are the King! What a life-saver! Been praying for such an addon for long and now this! Thanks and keep at it.
Makes it easy to install all extensions at a 2nd Computer. Works perfect with XP-SP2. Just check CLEO for pack them into one single .xpi 2942 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2942
I'm about to switch computers, and this will make things so much easier. Thank you.
