Mare Browser Extension

Overview
Mare (“we”, “our”, or “us”) is a browser extension that lets you save images, text, and links to your personal Mare collection. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and who we share it with.

Data We Collect
Data You Provide
When you use Mare, we collect only the content you explicitly choose to save:

Images: URLs of images you click “Save to Mare” on
•
Text: Text selections you right-click and save
•
Links: Page URLs you save via right-click menu
•
Source URLs: The webpage URL where you saved content (so you can find the original)
Platform Metadata (Social Media Only)
When saving images from Instagram, Pinterest, or Twitter/X, we extract publicly visible metadata to help you search your collection:

Post captions or descriptions
•
Author usernames
•
Image alt text
•
Original post URLs
This metadata is only collected when you explicitly save an image.

Authentication Data

Email address: Used to identify your account

Authentication token: Stored locally to keep you logged in

How We Use Your Data
All collected data is used solely to:

Save content to your personal Mare collection
2.
Keep you logged into the extension
3.
Display saved content in your Mare account
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond providing the Mare service.

Data Sharing
Your data is shared with the following parties:

Mare API (api.mare.run)
When you save content, the image URL, text, or page URL is sent to our API for processing and storage. Your saved content is stored in your private Mare account.

Supabase (Authentication)
We use Supabase for authentication. Your email and authentication tokens are processed by Supabase to manage your login session. See Supabase Privacy Policy.

No Third-Party Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any other third parties. We do not use analytics services in the extension.

Data Storage
Local Storage
The extension stores in your browser's local storage:

Authentication token (to keep you logged in)
•
User email (to display in the popup)
This data never leaves your device except during authentication.

Server Storage
Content you save is stored on Mare's servers (hosted on Google Cloud Platform) and associated with your account. You can delete your saved content at any time from the Mare web app.

Data Security

All data transmission uses HTTPS encryption

Authentication tokens are securely managed via Supabase
•
We do not store passwords in the extension
•
Server data is protected by industry-standard security measures
Your Rights
You can:

•
Access: View all your saved content in the Mare web app
•
Delete: Remove any saved content from your collection
•
Logout: Clear your authentication data from the extension at any time
•
Uninstall: Remove the extension, which deletes all local data

Host Permissions (CDN Access)
The extension requires access to specific CDN (Content Delivery Network) domains to fetch images when you save them:

cdninstagram.com, fbcdn.net - Instagram images
•
pinimg.com - Pinterest images
•
pbs.twimg.com - Twitter/X images
•
are.na - Are.na images
These platforms serve images from CDN subdomains with CORS restrictions. Without direct access, image saves would fail. The extension only fetches images you explicitly click “Save” on - no background requests are made.

Content Script (All URLs)
The extension uses a content script that can run on any webpage. This is required to:

•
Display “Save to Mare” buttons on images
•
Detect when you're on a supported platform (Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter/X, Are.na)
The content script does NOT read page content, track browsing, or collect any data. It only adds visual save buttons and responds to your clicks.

Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in our practices. We will notify users of significant changes through the extension or our website.
