Forgetful – Selective History Eraser
Most history tools make you choose between keeping everything and clearing everything. Forgetful lets you decide what your browser never remembers, and leaves the rest of your history alone.
Create rules, and any page that matches is removed from your history automatically.
WHAT A RULE CAN MATCH
- Domain: example.com (subdomains included)
- Wildcard URL: example.com/watch/ or .example.com
- Keyword: words or phrases in the page URL, title or visible text
- Regular expression: for precise or complex patterns
Each rule can have many entries, one per line. Lines starting with # are treated as comments.
FEATURES
- Whitelist rules: always keep history for pages that match, even if an erase rule also matches.
- Erase this page now: remove the current page from history in one click, no rule needed.
- Optional extras per rule: erase all earlier history on the same domain, and clear cookies, local storage, IndexedDB or service workers for the site.
- Visual indicators: a toolbar badge, a page outline and/or a title prefix on pages that were erased (all optional).
- Test a page: dry-run a URL, title and text against your rules to see which rule would fire, without touching your history.
- Search your rules and drag to reorder them. When several erase rules match, the first in the list applies.
- Import and export your rules as a JSON backup.
- Light and dark themes.
- Safe regex handling: regular expressions run in a background worker with a time limit, so a badly written pattern can't freeze your browser. A pattern that runs too long is skipped and flagged in your rules list.
PRIVACY
Forgetful does not collect, store or transmit any data. Your rules and settings stay in your browser's local storage. The add-on makes no network requests.
WHY IT NEEDS EACH PERMISSION
- History: to find and delete history entries that match your rules.
- Access to all websites: to read a page's URL, title and text so keyword and regex rules can match. Page content is only checked locally and is never stored or sent anywhere.
- Tabs, web navigation and scripting: to know which page is open, detect navigation, and check pages that were already open when the add-on was installed.
- Storage: to save your rules and settings.
- Browsing data: only used if you turn on "also clear site data" for a rule.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Firefox can't limit "Cache" and "Form data" clearing to one site, so ticking those options in a rule clears them for the whole browser. Cookies, local storage, IndexedDB and service workers are cleared for the matching site only.
- Pages you have bookmarked keep their history record, because Firefox preserves it for bookmarks.
- Forgetful doesn't scan PDF files. Rules based on the URL still apply to them.
- Firefox doesn't record history in private windows, so Forgetful has nothing to erase there.
