My Reviews

mms Auto Correct

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Seems to work as advertised on Thunderbird 24, Windows 7.

Possible improvements: automatically capitalise the first letter of a new line, and the first letter of the entire message.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.0.2).

Digest

Doesn't Sync Rated 3 out of 5 stars

The add-on's description says that tagged and starred posts synchronise using Firefox Sync, but Digest doesn't actually synchronise anything.

The feeds synchronise because they're just live bookmarks, but the read status of each item doesn't. The add-on's preferences don't synchronise, even though there's a simple way to opt in to this: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Firefox_Sync/Syncing_custom_preferences

CleanupTabs

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This add-on does exactly what I want, except that it interferes with Firefox's session restore.

If I set “When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time”, then when I close and reopen Firefox I just have a lot of blank tabs. This only happens when this extension is active.

Very useful add-on — would be 5 stars if not for that bug.

Edit: This bug is now fixed in 0.8.3.

Edit 2: I'm seeing this bug again with 0.8.3. (Max tabs is set to 100; could it be that this bug is only triggered once the total number of tabs in the session exceeds this number?)

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.8.2).

Digest

I'm impressed (which is rare) Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Virtually a drop-in replacement for (or possibly better than) Google Reader.

Kudos to Digest and Brief's developers!

☺:
* Starring an item creates a *real* bookmark.
* The Ctrl+Alt+D keystroke switches to Digest if it's already open.

Enhancement requests:
* I'd like the sidebar to be able to show only feeds with unread items. (Or perhaps do this automatically when “only unread” is active.)
* I'd like to be able to have two types of feeds: one treated as an inbox (oldest first, don't miss any); the other as a river of news (newest first, discard after a month). I haven't yet come across a feed reader capable of this.
* Also I'd like to know what “Automatically mark items as read after I see them” does. I haven't been able to find any difference in behaviour with it ticked versus unticked.

☹:
* The space bar shouldn't scroll more than one page down. I'm used to using space to page down, but this is broken in Digest. (In Google Reader, space moves the view down by either one page or one item, whichever is less.)

OPML Support

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Importing OPML doesn't work. When I press OK, “Processing bookmarks...” appears in the dialogue box then nothing else happens. The OK button is still active so maybe that's what doesn't work. (1 star because I can't give 0 stars.)

Send Later

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Works well, but looks painfully ugly. Especially version 3.3.8—the blue text hurts my eyes.

If I wanted brightly-coloured text and grouping boxes I'd add a theme.

Can I make this add-on use the standard controls style that the rest of Thunderbird uses?

FabTabs

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Since 1.4.1 the active tab doesn't blend into the toolbar because of all the extra gradients.

I now can't figure out how to wrangle userChrome so that they match. They even appear to be different hues.

It's a good idea, and 1.4 good even be made to look reasonably pretty, but 1.4.1 is incorrigibly ugly.

Mozilla Labs: Prospector - Home Dash

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

I like the idea and the tab-switching UI, but Home Dash is useless for me because of the perverse way the location bar replacement works. Pressing Ctrl+L and entering a complete web address doesn't take me to that address. Instead, it takes me to another page on the same domain that I've visited frequently. Bizarrely, the only way to actually visit a particular web address is to *search* for it.

Fission

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I only want show the hovered link's address in the location bar—I don't want to move the progress bar.

Could these two unrelated functions be separated into two add-ons?
