Why was Flat Folder Tree created?

I depend heavily on Gmail and Google Apps, and one of the annoyances with it was the extra [Gmail] folder in the IMAP folder tree. Although Thunderbird got some alternate folder layouts, I thought it would be great to add some flexibility to the All Folders layout. With some research on Thunderbird UI APIs, I found that a new folder tree layout can be introduced where the user would have ultimate control on flattening out one or more folders selectively. And thus, Flat Folder Tree was born.

What's next for Flat Folder Tree

There can be many uses of this little add-on in addition to hiding the [Gmail] folder from the folder tree. I am open to community feedback and contributions while I develop and make further improvements to this add-on.
