My Reviews

gPDF

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This is a pretty smooth way of using google pdf viewer (I had set up a bookmark keyword before, which works sorta ok but not as fast). However, with certain non-PDF links which have the word PDF in them, it redirects to Google reader which is bad news.

TabAway

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I mysteriously find that I have to double click slower than usual to get this to work!!

I second the double-click-current-tab-for-new-tab idea, though this isn't the place for such ideas.

(SonjaRay, there just aren't any preferences.)

Pocket

Reading things offline was buggier than I expected; it never seemed to be able to download all the pages I wanted it to. Additionally I couldn't convince myself to actually keep up with the reading. I inevitably accrued more and more. If I keep my reading open in tabs I seem to have more incentive to actually read it, and reading an open tab without an Internet connection works flawlessly; so that's what I'll do.

Semantic Turkey

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This can be used for bookmarking, but is a steep learning curve and is missing some of the conveniences necessary, such as a sync server to back up your bookmarks and share them amongst several computers, and browsing through bookmarks could be made easier too. I think this is the way bookmarking should work but it will have to be convenient first.

Googlepedia

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This is pretty useful, but it seems to make Firefox unresponsive while the Wikipedia article is loading, and, Wikipedia is only a click away anyway, and, when I click a Wikipedia link I want to go to Wikipedia not another googlepedia search. (actually I think going to another googlepedia search is awesome but it never turns out useful. Overall that's this addon all around- awesome but not necessarily as useful as it looks.)

Harmony

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

wtb's review was very helpful, I use this purely in order to scrobble Pandora but it rarely works! "Connect to last.fm" seemed to do it after the second time or so.

haha I don't even ever use last.fm, why am I worried?

Zotero

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

For me this brings my research almost fully into the 21st century. I say almost because though Zotero has most of the features I've ever dreamed of, it is not fully polished yet, and is to my mind missing real intuitive PDF functionality. There are lots of scripts available on the forum for improving this, and I haven't tried them yet, so keep that in mind.

Zotero is great for keeping notes of every conceivable sort on papers, sorting them, whatever you want to do more efficiently. Yet its many advantages make me think up still more improvements to the research process and leave me wanting more.

Jeania: You probably won't read this but, it is possible to bookmark ordinary pages, just open the zotero pane and click the second, third or fourth button above the middle column.

Back to Google

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is simple and exactly what I had in mind when I googled "back to google".
