I need just download video from youtube. Why do I necessarily need to install some kind of converter?

Now slaps on qr code to video Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I've been using DWhelper for a while now. Only recently has it began messing with the actual videos, in this case adding a qr code to the top left of the video. Why would you do that? You were a great add on before and still are an ok one. But you've let me down. That's why I gave you one star.

Unbrauchbar geworden -> von allen Rechnern entfernt Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Null Sterne gibt es bekannterweise nicht, daher musste ich einen vergeben. Der Video Downloadhelper war mal gut, jetzt ist er unbrauchbar.

Requires you to purchase a license to use a free software video converter. Scummy. Total POS. Removed from my computer, and all of my clients' computers.

UX and behaviour Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Please stop making updates self open a page of nowhere while the users are navigating, that is very annoying.

Please change the turn into down pointing arrow icon button when a download are being done, it is very similar to firefox own download manager icon and that is confusing users, two down pointing arrow icons are inducing click mistakes.

Barcode is now added to all downloads (May 2015) Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This was a great add-in for a long time, but now it requires a paid registration to remove the barcode.
The user interface has also in my opinion taken a turn for the worse with a confusing multiplicity of options. Uninstalled.

Used to be much more powerful and easy to use. That was years ago and I barely find a use for it anymore.

The ONLY option for my video downloads! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I've been using this add-on for years and I've tried other downloaders (Flashgot, etc) and always come back to VDH. It's just the best out there and does what it says it does and does it well. It's a no brainer for me for one HUGE reason - less clicks needed to download.

It can download videos from pretty much anywhere, but it can also download flash games, pictures, audio, etc. All that needs to be done is to add the file type extensions for detection and you're good to go, it instantly shows you what you want to download and with a single click it will.

As far as the latest updates go - I was thrown for a loop when everything changed and it took me a bit to get used to it but with everything, change is inevitable. All the naysayers who fear change and are pissing and moaning and giving it a low rating just because it looks different than you remember - Really? I bet when you open up Firefox you want it to be as user friendly and beautiful as AOL 3.0 too right? Then there's the whole conversion thing.

If you don't want to convert something and you can do it yourself - GO DO IT! Don't come on here and call the developer an a-hole and tell him to go f himself. How old are you keyboard warriors? He's a person - not some huge corporation, who I might add responds to every concern and the support of the program for as long as its been out and as many people use it - IS OUTSTANDING. I wish I got that kind of Customer Support from my home service providers. He asks for a donation for a program he's been letting all of us use for free for all these years and people lose their minds. A persons gotta eat. If you don't want to use it, don't. Don't go online and cry about it. We all have the right to make our own decisions. Pretty simple. I, for one, plan on staying right where I am.

Good functions, but terrible user interface since update Rated 2 out of 5 stars

The video download and save functions of this plugin are good (as they always were). The old user interface op the plugin was also good, but since the plugin has been updated to version 5.x the new user interface is terrible, almost unworkable!
The new user interface has become a very very slow popup, which is re-sizing during every slow build-up, it is much bigger in size than needed, and the poor user needs to click and click and click before reaching the desired function (a perfect way to induce repetitive strain injury - RSI).
I see a lot of users have complained over the new user interface, but with no interface reconstructions thus far. So I can only advise others to look for another media download plugin.

Some like the new UI, some don't. For those in the second category, we put back an alternative UI under the form of the companion button. By default, you have both buttons in the toolbar and from the add-on settings, you even can easily hide the main button (giving access to the new UI) and just keep the one that provides an UI very similar to what you had in VDH4.
Being honest, i don't understand the complaints about the new UI given that you have the choice to use the old one (at least something very similar).

The latest version, 5.3.1, is still going well for me, but it has some weird bug: it leaves a lot of blank space at the bottom of 4chan-like message boards (other board users have complained about this too).

The blank space issue has been fixed in version 5.3.1 that has just been released.

From pleasant - to painful... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

EDIT: I forced myself to use this add-on despite I hated it... And guess what, 5 days later I felt I had to come back here and edit my review. After getting familiar with settings and user interface, it really makes sense after all. Now I'd never go back to the "good old" version, for THIS is the better version!
My hate was a classic "can't see the forest for the trees" - caused by having to leave a comfort zone and starting up with a new program. The work flow suddenly grinds to a halt...
But believe you me, mate, a tiny little bit of patience is all it takes. Before you know it you're right back in the zone again, - and in total control..

Rating up from 2 to well deserved 5 stars!

The new GUI is a giant leap in the wrong direction!
I've loved this add-on for years, it was great, user-friendly, minimalistic, it had traditional menus... It was brilliant!!!

I enjoy some of the new features, but wish they were integrated without making such a mess.
I'm left with an allround unpleasant experience, and have started the hunt for its successor...

If you let alone the main toolbar button (that you can easily hide from the addon settings), and use only the companion button, do you really see a big difference with what you had in VDH4.x ?

So... I have read reviews. Decided to try the latest version anyway. Being trolled or not... the changes to VDH have ended my use. The end user complaints are valid while the response has been less than that.

I could not download a single youtube video w/o installing the "helper" add-on. This was not a problem before v5 came out. As many stated... DTA no longer works with any version 5.

I've gone back to 4.9.24. It simply works, has no need for another add-on, & pushes links to DTA.

Mixed opinion on new version Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I've been using VDH for several years now. I've always liked it better than other options, but I may seriously start to look elsewhere.

I do like the idea of less clicks needed to download, but there is a real problem with lack of integration with DownThemAll or the ability to integrate with ANY other download manager. Regular linear download for any reasonably sized video is just resource prohibitive in most cases. I feel like I've just jumped back to the days of 56K dialup.

I haven't seen any of the other issues people are complaining about because I haven't had the time to use it much lately, mostly due to the lack of DTA integration.

I will say though that a long and persistent annoyance remains with this new version and it speaks volumes about the attitudes and practices of the developers. I'm speaking of the browser hi-jack upgrade notification page. NO SOFTWARE except perhaps, MAYBE the browser itself should EVER auto-load ANY web page, certainly not at startup.

I don't care WHAT you have or think you have to tell me. Do it some other way that is less intrusive and looks less like I just discovered malware.

When a user opens their browser they expect certain pages, or no page, to load. Pages a user did not INTENTIONALLY ask to load should NEVER do so. On top of this, there is no way I can find to turn this behavior OFF.

This speaks volumes about the developers. On this note alone, I might choose to use another add-on or none at all. I will NEVER support anyone who willfully continues to engage in such behavior.

My computer is MINE not yours. It does what I tell it to do, not what you tell it to do. Do NOT HI-JACK my browser!

-p.s. I've also not used this much since the mac version won't update and has ceased all functionality. I can only use it on my linux box now.
