The hearts are real, not a photoshop creation - nothing has been added to the photo. They are out of focus points of light called "bokeh" reflecting off of tiny droplets from the splash of a drop of water. I custom designed the shape of the bokeh by using a cardboard disk over the lens in which I cut a heart shaped hole to replace the camera's aperture. An electronic sensor/timer/trigger device detects the falling drop & sets off first the camera, then the flashes. Photo was taken in a darkened room with high speed flash of about 1/15,000 sec (or 70us) to stop the action. Red and blue colored gel filters were used on the flashes, with the blue flash aimed at the background and red at the top of the splash to color the hearts. Photography and electronics are two of my hobbies.
Happy Valentines Day!
