Zoom Page

Zoom Page 12.0 (for me) is no longer compatible with Firefox 34 and above Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I have used Zoom Page 12.0 for a long time with various versions of Firefox up to Firefox 33.1.1 in Windows 7 with great success but when upgrading to Firefox 34 or 35 I had problems with the Zoom Page Button Style Option not initialising. The Zoom Page button was also missing completely from the Firefox customisation menu. Selecting any of the options in the drop down Button Style Option box would then cause Zoom Page to initialise and all web pages would then become unreadable in very large text which couldn’t be rectified.

According to the developer the most likely cause of this issue was the fact that in Firefox 33 and earlier, information about the buttons on the toolbars was stored in ‘localstore.rdf’. In Firefox 34, ‘localstore.rdf’ was replaced by ‘xulstore.json’. However I couldn’t understand this as in my profile both files localstore.rdf and xulstore.json are installed.

The developer considers my profile to be corrupt and has recommended establishing a new profile but I have pointed out that the same profile has been in regular use without any issues in all versions of Firefox up to version 33.1.1.

Unfortunately, in the circumstances I have found it necessary to abandon Zoom Page completely and install NoSquint 2.1.9 which has exactly the same text and page zoom facilities and works flawlessly with my current profile in Firefox 35.0.1.

Zoom Page has no issues running in my other Firefox derivative browsers, namely Pale Moon and IceDragon as both these browsers currently use versions of Firefox earlier than 33.1.1.

I should like to thank the Zoom Page developer for his help, it’s just unfortunate that the matter couldn’t be resolved without perhaps the major task of having to set up a new profile.

Memory Restart

Broken in Firefox 26.0 Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Shows zero all the time. Shame this is now redundant. I now have to use RAM Restart but I do not like it as much because it doesn't give a reminder message when clicking it to restart Firefox.

Statusbar Date()

Exceptionally well thought out. Perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Have you ever seen any other add-on with a facility to position the day / date / time within the add-on bar? Quite exceptional in my opinion. Other add-ons need to have the same facility because it is not possible to move an add-on within the bar using the Firefox customize facility.
If you simply want a clock that improves on Windows 7 clock then this is it. I have it positioned just above the Windows 7 clock and it gives a me a customizable day / date / time and even seconds. Even if you install another add-on in the bar this add-on will remain in the same position. Brilliant!

System Monitor

Perfect for my requirements Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The bar graph in the add-ons bar is exactly what I wanted to show me when my system is using too much memory. I have other tools that show me network up and down and what Firefox is using so this is exactly right.
The only slight complaint is that the colours for the background and foreground are not rendered properly in the bar graph. The only one I could find that looked really natural was purple for the foreground. That works well as the increased or decreased memory is traced with a lighter colour across the top of the purple bar. Great!
It would help though to have the add-on updated for Firefox 6.0.2 instead of having to open the install.rdf and change the maxversion each time a new version of Firefox comes out.

About config button

Nice simple alternative to 'Toolbar Buttons' Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Works just great and it's just a mere 13kb.
It was nice to find a simple alternative to Toolbar Buttons / Custom Toolbar Buttons where the site was quite often down and the forum suffered with spam. Always the MaxVersion had to be changed but About Config Button is compatible up to Firefox version 9. No problems here.
I think the Toolbar and Addons Manager icons could be improved and made clearer with a green hammer or spanner image.
There are a number of translation issues that need to be addressed. For example the toolbar icon tooltip needs translating to English in chrome / content / button.xul

Word Count Plus

Simple alternative is a WordCount JavaScript bookmark Rated 4 out of 5 stars

The developer has not updated Word Count Plus for a long time so it does not work with Firefox 4 / 5 / 6 etc.
The workaround by Meryl will allow WCP to be installed (as would installing Compatibility Reporter) but the problem is there are serious flaws in it which have not been addressed. For example, the icon was designed to be installed in the Status Bar as it was in 2008 but the Status Bar is now included with the Add-on Bar. This somehow causes the options popup to display with a transparent background and while it works it is really a mess.

For the time-being try this alternative Javascript Bookmark. It is really simple and works brilliantly in Firefox 6.
Go to
Drag the WordCount link to your Bookmarks and you are done.
Select your text and click the link. Displays the number of words and characters.

Really does make a noticeable difference in Firefox 5 but stopped working in Firefox 7 Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Stops Firefox 5.0.1 'going to sleep' when I leave the computer for a few hours.
For some time now when returning to the computer I have to wait several minutes for Firefox to 'wake up' and sometimes Windows will also display the message 'unresponsive'.
Since installing RAMBack I no longer have this problem and even in normal use I can see that Firefox is more responsive.
I have been constantly watching the memory usage of Firefox with StatusbarEx and in normal usage with say 6 tabs open it will show memory constantly being cleaned and dropping to 10mb before stabilising at around 30mb. If I leave the computer it will stabilise at around 18mb.
This means I am not constantly having to worry about my workload hiking the RAM up to near 70% or 80%.
While typing this review the maximum memory Firefox is using is 35mb out of an available 488mb.
Only takes a mere 12kb on disc as well.
I think that it does a great job.

Edit: October 17, 2011
With Firefox 7.0.1 RamBack no longer works at all.
I suppose it has done well to last up to Firefox version 5 without modification since 2007.
It is a great pity that it no longer works and that the developer has not updated it for 4 years.
It could of course be an add-on conflict but I doubt it as I have not added anything since FF5.
I have had to change the star rating from 5 stars to 1 star as a result.

FreeRAM XP Pro for Windows XP is the better choice (but note this is not an add-on)
I have now installed FreeRAM XP Pro which works brilliantly if set to 'Try to Free 100mb' and the CPU: Aggressively. There are extensive settings for full customisation to the individual system requirements. It works independently of Firefox so there are no compatibility issues to worry about. Set it and leave!

Hopefully one day the developer will update RAMBack.

Brilliant. An extremely versatile add-on. The xml link generator works perfectly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Wow! I was bowled over with what this add-on could achieve. No other add-on that I could find has this versatlity. Because Chrome disables add-ons in its own 'incognito' mode I wanted a Firefox add-on that could open links or pages from Firefox in a Chrome sandboxed tab using an external sandbox program like Sandboxie. Launchy has a layman's facility (launchy.xml generator) to customize a context menu item using arguments which makes this so easy.Instructions on adding another customized menu item in the same xml file can be figured out from the example on gemal's launchy.xml file usage page, and although I have no coding knowledge I managed to figure it out and it all works brilliantly. What more can I say. Thank you.

Extension Manager Extended

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Until Paul has updated this to work with Firefox 4/5 may I suggest using the helpful Zippy Extension Packager. It will not provide dates etc.but it will show the ID and profile location for each extension.

Zippy Extension Packager

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Until Extension Manager Extender can be made compatible with Firefox 4 this little package will provide the ID of any extension and also its location.
Very useful. Thank you.

Well written and very similar to Multiproxy Switch Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This is a well written add-on and in many respects very similar to MultiProxy Switch which has now disappeared from the Mozilla lists but still available direct from the developers web site.

GuifiProxy lacks any facility to quickly open Settings without having to go through Tools / Add-ons . An option in the Tools menu would be much more convenient.

I do not think the toolbar icon is as clear as MultiProxy Switch when showing what proxy is set or if no proxy set.

Where GuifiProxy scores over MultiProxy Switch however is in its ability to import and export lists, but having said that you have to be very careful when importing a list as this will completely overwrite any proxies you have already manually established. This in my opinion is a serious flaw. I made this mistake and had to re-establish a range of proxies which I had not backed up. There should be an option to add to or overwrite completely any existing list. Cancelling at the import stage has no effect because the list has already been overwritten.

Also when adding a new proxy manually it would be more logical not to have to actually click on one of the proxies in settings and then click the add button before the pop-up screen appears.

It would be better to have a facility to automatically sort the list alphabetically like MultiProxy Switch without having to move each proxy up or down.

Cookies Manager+

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

A great add-on! I have not as yet tested all that it has to offer.
Thank you for keeping this add-on updated.
Same problem as with Add N Edit Cookies by Arightwizard - it lacks a means of contact / support.
The review page is not the place to be communicating problems.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.1).

Add N Edit Cookies

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

It is very good!
Main problem I find with it has no support contact.
Editor loads with too small window size which cuts off the close button and has to be resized every time.
Same add-on v0.3.1 by V@no is much better and does not suffer with this problem. It loads each time the correct window size.

Distill Web Monitor - Legacy

AlertBox has no flexibility when customising alerts Rated 3 out of 5 stars

A lot of thought has gone into this add-on. The developer provides excellent support. Firefox popup notifications are via Firefox and are only displayed for a few seconds. Poor presentation of url’s which will be rectified in the next version I understand. Problem with framed sites. No help files. Good responsive forum from the developer. I shall have to continue with WebMon or URLy Warning because they present the data simply and clearly and enable me to set a search range within the html coding. Both programs are no longer in development but Webmon is the superior option because it is only 532kb with so many customisable options. Everything works brilliantly. URLy Warning is the next best option but loading the page in the default browser and setting page limits for 'When page' 'contains' 'does not contain' do not work at all. See the AlertBox forum for more detail on these points

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Great Add-on! It is so much more user friendly than NoScript. It trains you to be aware of what cross site requests are being made from each web site. It is possible to turn off 'Indicate Blocked Images' to make it even less intrusive. Keep up the good work.

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Superb! It blocks one of the most difficult and intrusive popunders I have found on the web, namely
AdBlock Plus, AdMuncher, RequestPolicy & Close Popup Advertising were all unable to block this 'nasty'. Adding the link to Hosts was able to block it but was still unable to stop the popunder window from opening. Simply adding the link to BlockSite blocked this popup / popunder completely. I rest my case.

Does not work as a home page reload facility in Firefox 3.6.8 Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Perhaps this extension is not designed to be used for automatically re-loading a specified home page tab address at given intervals without having to set the interval via Tab Utilities or Tab Mix Plus. In these circumstances it does not work with more than one tab open.
This extension would have been useful as it would not have then been necessary to keep activating the TU or TMP timer each time the home page tab is opened or Firefox re-loaded.
When Firefox is loaded and the home page opened with the specified address set in Refresh2Page then that page will get refreshed at the given interval perfectly OK but if another tab is opened with a different address and the focus left on that other open tab then that tab gets refreshed / overwritten with the Refresh2Page URL.
All in all is does not work and there is no means of contacting the developer for support other than through this review system which is not what it is designed for.
Incidentally it is possible to force install this Add-on with Firefox 3.6.8 by installing the Add-on Nightly Tester Tools 2.0.3
I hope the developer and other users find this review helpful.

Froze Firefox & Windows completely Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This has to be one of the worst experiences I have had with any Add-on. It constantly grabbed all the cpu at 100% like js27 29-Mar-10 and froze up Windows completely at around 70% while checking 1400 bookmarks. Sorry to spoil the good rating it has so far but this has been my experience. I have uninstalled. I have been quite brutal with my rating but I had no choice. It may work well for a small number bookmarks but large lists causes it to fail.

Excellent add-on but when is it going to be updated for Firefox 3.6?

Currency Changer

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This add-on did not work at all for me. I even tried it in a basic profile. It gave a split second hint of working when changing screens so there is obviously some major incompatibility somewhere.
I emailed the developer with full details on two occasions for support but received no replies. Very poor!
