In a little more detail...

I'm an I.T. Pro with 13 years of experience, and have provided technical support, training, network security, and disaster recovery best practices solutions to individuals, small businesses, and major corporations. The most impressive sounding position I've held is as a Network Analyst, so I tend to call myself that :-)

Currently I own Computer Medix.

My Reviews

Evernote Web Clipper

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I love Evernote!!!

An incredibly useful extension for a really, really great free service!

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.0.0.177572).

Web of Trust - WOT

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This can be a great app!

It particularly helps clue in technically challenged people to the presence of phishing links in webmail messages.

It can also provide warning against malware infected websites...

However, the ratings are COMMUNITY based - and this means that the personal opinions and biases of individuals can and do color the ratings WOT provides, and undermines it's usefulness.

Also, site owners have little redress when a reviewer negatively rates their site out of malicious intent, or most commonly, out of personal bias.

So this is a useful tool to enhance the security of your computer, but there are some areas that need to be improved.

I have some suggestions that would address the issues people are pointing out, increase browser security, and greatly improve the community's satisfaction with the WOT add-on, as well as alleviate resentment from and injustice towards web developers:

1) Provide users with the ability to rate the opinions and ratings of other users, and so attach less weight to someone who is negatively rating sites such as Planned Parenthood out of religious conviction and/or political bias.

2) Make it easier for site owners to contest negative ratings, and provide some editorial review of these contested sites.

3) Tie-in the ability to rate sites with a login for mywot.com, so that logins must occur in order to rate sites. This will help the community flag the ratings of people acting out of malicious intent or seeking to force their personal bias on our internet.

FlashGot Mass Downloader

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

One of the all-time best extensions for Firefox!

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.3.3).

QuickJava

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Love, love, love this extension!

I really appreciate your obvious talent for UI design - placement of the buttons on the status bar and naming convention make it very easy to use.

This provides an easy to use alternative to NoScript with much of the functionality of NoScript and less hassle.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.7.5).

Flashblock

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

You need this.

This extension will speed up your Firefox and provide a little additional security, not to mention minimize the amount of annoyingly noisy advertisement you are subjected to.

Flash is bloaty, consumes memory like Cookie Monster consumes cookies, and spikes CPU utilization...not to mention the potential security issues!

Use FlashBlock to watch only the Flash you want to watch.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.5.15.1).

Greasemonkey

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

If you are at all tech-savvy, you gotta have this.

How do people exist without GreaseMonkey? I have no idea...

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.9.12).

NoScript Security Suite

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

One good way to prevent Malware attacks from infected sites!

Absolutely essential!

Also, can be a total pain in the ass ;-)

Computer security is always a trade-off between convenience and... security.

You will have to geek around with it to get your favorite sites working properly, and tweaking it will take a while.

Minor hassle for major security functionality.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (2.1.5).

FEBE

FEBE is a life saver! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

@MichaellsGreat - hysterical use of exclamation points should be a grounds for flagging a review ;-)

But then, using emoticons should probably be as well.

Calm yourself, ninja of spaz.

I've used this extension many times, and it's reliable, and an essential part of a backup/disaster recovery plan.

It's powerful, highly customizable, and well supported by the developer - just make sure you post your question or problem in the right place ;-)

Writing this review I just realized how often I use it and recommend it - I should donate, right?

Definitely. Also, people, try saying thanks once in a while. At least.

Developing anything takes time and energy, and it gets annoying to hear complaints consistently from the least technically savvy users.

I can't say it's always been perfect, as I've had ONE problem with it in all the time that I've used it, but then I haven't checked the support forum page, and what with all of the potential compatibility issues that could arise with other extensions (which may not be properly designed themselves), I'd expect to find that the problem originates with another extension and not FEBE. You might want to check the support link before deciding that it's FEBE and kvetching in here.

I trust this developer and this extension, and I admire the amount of control you have over the extensions functionality, and I highly recommend this extension - even to customers.

Creating this extension must have been a massive undertaking...

Thanks, Chuck!

Memory Fox

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This extension is pretty helpful, generally reducing memory usage by 40-60 percent - depending on how you configure MemoryFox and the number of other extensions you have running.

Sites that use Flash extensively will cause the most memory consumption and CPU utilization.

Memory Fox is very good, and like the author states openly, NOT a magic bullet. It is a helper, not a cure - and it does this very well.

Properly configured, it should double the time you can use your browser without a restart on a RAM limited system.

Google Shortcuts - All Google Services at a glance

This add-on is so good, I downgraded Firefox to continue using it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This add-on is amazingly useful!

I like it so much, that I uninstalled Firefox 7, and found Firefox 5 and installed it simply to continue using this add-on.

By the way, you can download every version of Firefox in the history of ever right here:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

That's high praise, when an add-on becomes more important then using the lastest version of FireFox.

I really do prefer the improvements found in Firefox 7, so I really hope you have an update planned before Firefox 7 is obsolete :-)
