InstantFox Quick Search

So long and thanks for all the fish Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Judging by the other reviews this add-on may be dead. Many thanks to the dev for all the hard work to this point.

However, because the way this add-on works is so ingrained into the way I browse, I've been looking to replicate the functionality. I thought some people might be interested:

I've found that the "Smart keywords" function built into Firefox can be used to search from the address bar in a similar manner, albeit without suggestions and less customisation. Documented here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-search-from-address-bar

Also there are a few separate addons that replicate much of the right click/context search aspect: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/search/?q=context+search&appver=49.0&platform=windows

Abduction! - Webpage Screenshots Screen Capture

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

As excellent as it always was, but saving images seems to be broken as mentioned below.

Hopefully there will be a fix, but luckily for the time being the "copy" function still works fine, so clicking copy and pasting into an image editor is a workaround.

FavIcon Reloader up to FF 48 only

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Working now. Don't know why, just reinstalled, but it's all good :-)

Thank you very much for creating this. It makes bookmark lists much nicer and more usable, especially since Firefox doesn't sync favicons across browsers.

Icon gone for me too in latest version Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Not found in customize menu either. Rolling back to previous version fixed it.
Could be a conflict with another extension, but definitely not working here.

EDIT: It's working on one of my systems, not the other. Both up to date versions of Firefox, but have many different extensions, so I guess it's a conflict. Will be doing a fresh install soon so will try to work out what is causing the problem.

KeePass Helper

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Does a simple job and does it well.

Too the two reviews below about omitting the trailing /:

You could presumably switch to "Show full URL" in the options, but I supose that could be messy if you have a visible title bar.

Bearing that in mind, I think I have a simple work around that would block the sort of attempt KuttKatrea refers to:

The addon inputs a space and a user definable spacer (default is "-") after the hostname.
If you add a space and whatever the spacer is to the end of the URL in the field Keepass matches for autotype (either the Title or URL) in lieu of a trailing slash then this should stop it matching any hostname longer but containing the one intended.

Gmail™ Notifier (restartless)

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Sticking with 5 stars because this extension has been and is excellent.

However, the last update broke things for me.
The toolbar icon went abnormally big and then disappeared on next restart, never to be seen again. No options, no nothing.

Rolling back to 4.7 fixed things though (accessible via: Version information" > "See complete version history" near the bottom of the page)

Tab Mix Plus

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Updating to Firefox 31 messed up my settings horribly (nothing working, with two xs on each tab (??) ).
However, I found un-installing and re-installing Tab Mix Plus fixed things, including restoring my original settings.

I was worried for a minute. I've had my custom mouse click actions on the tab bar for years, I'd be lost without them.

Control! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Very nice.

If I want to download a file that I can otherwise view in Firefox I'll "right click-save link as". I don't need to be forced to save a file in order to view it.

It's especially annoying with images.

British English Dictionary (Updated)

You have to set the language manually Rated 5 out of 5 stars

It's a shame you can't reply to reviews except as a dev.

This dictionary isn't "fake" and does recognise common variations between US and British spellings (color - colour, artifact - artefact). I'm looking at them now.

Indeed (to be thorough) I copied and pasted this whole list into a text box: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_spelling_variants
And it got the vast majority correct.

The problem is people not following the instruction in the description:

"To enable, right-click in a multi-line text box, select "Languages", then "English / United Kingdom"."

If you don't do this Firefox will default to US English even if you have British English installed. I suppose this isn't the most obvious way of doing things. It would be better if Firefox asked upon installing a new dictionary which to use as default.

However, it does correctly recognise most common British spellings if it is set up correctly.

Star-Button In Urlbar

Simple and effective Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Does the job nicely.
However, any chance of having the option to make the star blue in Windows to match the "Edit This Bookmark" popup?
Or alternatively turn the popup on yellow :-)

Another way of getting the bookmarks folder back on the toolbar is to move the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" from the Bookmarks Toolbar to the Location Bar.
Then create a bookmark in the bookmarks menu with the location:

Then move it to the Bookmarks Toolbar folder. It should give you a button with the Bookmarks Menu contents in it.
Leave the name of the bookmark blank to have it just show as a button/folder.

DictionarySearch (Official Version)

So simple yet so much scope. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

It basically means you can highlight any text, insert it into any url and open it directly on right click.
This means you can make custom right click searches on any site that has a regular url string when you search, which is most sites.

For example:
Search Twitter for "$"

- For searching Twitter ("All", not "Top")

Because it's simple and logical you can even get creative. I use this:
Open "$"

- To simply open a new tab with the highlighted text in address bar, which I use to open plain text URLs.

It may be called "Dictionary"Search but it can do a lot more than that.

Hide Caption Titlebar Plus

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I'm so pleased that this still works with FF29.

The new UI meant a bit of fiddling to make things to my liking, but this extension performed admirably. I'm fairly sure it's the only way I could manage to keep the features I like while maximising vertical space and not totally ditching the good things about Australis.

I love the way it can adapt the UI between maximised and unmaximised windows.

It's a tweakers dream.

Button Positioning Issues Rated 5 out of 5 stars

(This may be linked to the issue in the previous review)

For me, since the 29 (Australis) update the button is stuck on the left hand side of the top (menu) bar and wont move (or even show up) in the "customise..." view.

However, I've tested it with a totally clean Firefox profile and it works fine. I figure it's something to to with the update or some customisation prior to the update.

Download Manager Tweak

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I really like it, but unfortunately it seems to stop the download icon on the toolbar from showing remaining download time. Instead it just stays as a static arrow.

While I really like the more powerful download manager this addon gives you I've got used to using the icon to see the progress of background downloads at a glance without taking up any screen space.

I can't really use this addon until it doesn't change the behaviour of the download icon, which is a shame. I'll keep it disabled an hope for an update.

If this issue doesn't bother you I highly recommend it.

Hide Caption Titlebar Plus

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Excellent extension.
Means I can fit in all the UI elements and functionality I want without compromising on browsing space when maximised or usability when windowed.

The only issue I have is that when in full screen mode (either via F11 or full screen HTML5 video) the custom ui elements like the Firefox button or the custom close buttons are not hidden (or in the case of the close buttons, exposed even if they are hidden in the settings). Not a major issue, but kinda annoying especially with video.

If you want something that automatically converts text based on criteria to links or something clever like that there are extensions available.

However, if you want something that simply opens the highlighted text (whatever it is and however it is formatted) in a new tab, as if you'd typed it in the navigation bar then this is for you.

I find this more versatile, flexible and reliable than more complicated solutions that try (and often fail) to interpret sometimes deliberately obfuscated urls.

As mentioned in the review below, being able to use this for text in editable text boxes would be the icing on the cake, but it's still excellent as it is.

FavIcon Reloader up to FF 48 only

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Ideal if you're reloading bookmarks from a backup, which will mean you have no favicons at all.
A tiny little niche extension that makes my bookmarks folder a more colourful and friendly place to be. Thank you for creating it.

Feedly Notifier

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Really neat. Does exactly what I want it to with a minimum of fuss. Just quietly sits next to my email notifier. Makes Feedly usable as a direct replacement for Google Reader for me.

Couple of ideas though:
- It would be good if you could toggle off the "mark all as read" button. I don't use it and I just know I'm going to hit it by accident on of these days :-)
- If an article could be greyed out for a while (or something) when you click rather than disappear, so you could mark it as unread again if when you look at it and it's something you want to read later.

Download Panel

Update? Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I like the new Firefox download manager, but I really miss extra the information this extension used to give me. It would be great if an update could mean the best of both worlds.

Even if the information isn't integrated into the new popup, the same download panel but moved from the old download window to the new "Show All Downloads"/"Library" window would be excellent and very much appreciated.

Auto focus URL bar

Tiny and Wonderful Rated 5 out of 5 stars

For everyone saying F6, Ctrl+L or Alt+D does this:

The point is that you just start typing anywhere, and unless an editable element is selected the text is entered in the location bar immediately. Same result, but quicker, smoother and more intuitive. Windows 8 does the same on the start screen.

Ideal for use with Location Bar Enhancer, where the clickable breadcrumb trail makes clicking to enter URLs and tiny bit awkward.
Also, if you use it with InstantFox you can search pretty much any site amazingly quickly by just typing anywhere.
Use with Enter Selects and you can get to pretty much anywhere just by typing and hitting enter.

It even saves your bacon if you start typing and don't notice you've missed the text box you want (am I the only one that does this from time to time? :-). The text gets entered in the Location Bar automatically rather than disappearing into the ether. A quick Ctrl+A, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V and it's back where you want it.

So many improvements to basic functionally in such a small extension.
