TidyRead 0.4.0 Requires Restart
by Matthew Chen
TidyRead turns your web reading into a fast, smooth, no-fringe experience again. It intelligently extracts the core text of news articles and blog posts — even multi-page ones. TidyRead allows you to quickly grasp the main message of the page.
About this Add-on
TidyRead provides a browser add-on which strips away all the extra stuff from news or blog article pages, leaving you with some nicely formatted text to read. The extracted article is overlayed with the original page and it is easy to switch back and forth to TidyRead layer or the original content layer.
In the TidyRead mode, you can customize the styles, font size and margin site by site and those customization info are saved on the cookies.
TidyRead can work in Smart Mode that means it automatically extracts and displays the article if TidyRead believe it is an article page with confidence. So you don't need to manually click a button or link to activate the TidyRead.
Furthermore you can customize TidyRead with disallow and allow list.
TidyRead supports Right to Left (RTL) languages and displays well.
TidyRead does it best to keep the original article layout, and intelligently extracts the content images, videos and other objects.
All the image and script files are inside the add-on package and it doesn't send out any information to other outside servers.
Starting from version 0.3.0, TidyRead works with NoScript. Now NoScript users can run TidyRead.
Starting from version 03.5, TidyRead automates the "next page". When scrolling near the end of the page, TidyRead detects and renders the next page, so you need not to click the next page anymore.
We test on most of news and blog sites and it works perfectly to extract article (or content page). In case you seen any problem that it doesn't work, please send us comments and feedback.
2. Support different open modes:
a) Open a TidyRead overlay on the original page. It is easy to return to the original page by clicking anywhere outside of TidyRead overlay, and you can also sense the original layout without closing the TidyRead.
b) Open TidyRead to replace the original page. We had users to report the slow response when rendering and displaying TidyRead overlay. If this is your case, you can choose to use this open mode and improve the rendering speed. Thanks Pootow for suggesting this mode.
3. Implement the algorithm to extract the author and publish date. Now it can accurately detect and display the author and publish date. Let us know if you see any site that it doesn't work well in this aspect.
4. Non-aggressive smart mode by improving the news and blog post detection with more accuracy. Don't process if we don't have confidence that it is a news or blog post pages. Then users can click the icon or toolbar button to manually open.
5. Fix bugs.
6. Tune UI.
