The idea of blocking webpages from yourself may seem absurd at first, but I have found it very effective. When you have to write academic texts, all too often you get stuck at a particular point and then look at a completely different webpage just for distraction. Now I just look at the "blocked" sign and return to work much quicker; LeechBlock is a good tool to help breaking bad habits. I especially like how sophisticated it is in terms of choosing times when certain pages are blocked etc.
It does not stop procrastination completely though:
1) It does not stop you from looking at irrelevant webpages that you find via Google. For example, I read the sentence: "Dedicated to our collegue Dr. V. P. da S., who was killed in March 2004 by African bees during an excursion in the Pantanal." in the opening of a journal article and spent some time finding out how dangerous bees can be to humans.
2) Instead of procrastinating on your favourite webpages, you may find yourself procrastinating away from your computer; I spent some time eating cherries I found outside on a tree and practicing my juggling skills. Overall, however, I'd say that is still preferable, since at least you spend less time in front of your computer.
3) That "blocked" page tells you to write a review, which is what I'm currently doing here. It is also a form of procrastination, since I should be finishing my chapter. However, I think I will only write one review, so from tomorrow onwards that should not be a problem either.

Great Tool, much more sophisticated than the one I've used before.

There is only one thing I'm missing - when blocking after a certain time spent on a site, it should have an option to count the time for each site in a block list individually or all together - currently it's only the latter.

As I have a lot of sites I (should) visit only once per day or so, 6 sets are not enough to set that up with the current options.

Leechblock is seriously the best addon I've found for the task. Once you figure out the customisation options and configure an appropriate set-up it really helps you focus. For context I am a third-year university student and Leechblock has proved invaluable for me in my studies.

Perfect! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I love it! I must have reduced the time I waste on computers by about 80 or 90 percent! (Although instead, I waste time following the link on the "page blocked by Leechblock" page to sign up and post a review lol)

This is why we're all on Firefox, the amount of fine-grained control some of these addons offer is just mind-boggling. This beast allows for various degrees of blocking lists of websites (such as news sites or forums you may spend all night reading), offering a full block or blocking for a certain amout of time per hour/day/whatever. You can even set passwords to stop yourself unblocking websites, hide the places you'd reach the options from and so on. It seems that you could even block a bunch of websites and then literally prevent yourself from ever being able to reach them again!
Fantastic job and *chapeau bas* from France (:

Amazing.

It's very easy to browse time leeching sites while I should be working and lose track of time. Truly the perfect extension for solving this exact problem.

I was terribly addicted to twitter, so much so that I almost lost my PhD grant to it. Thanks to Leechblock I managed to use the Pomodoro Technique, therefore giving myself a 5-minute twitting time as a reward for 25 minutes of hard work. I use a similar add-on in another mainstream web browser but Leechblock is far more customisable and flexible, that's why Firefox is now my default browser.

Fantastic! I generally enjoy my job but my compulsive personality sometimes makes it difficult to stay away from the web and focus. This provides the perfect reminder to engage in work. It's great because it helps you re-train yourself in how to interact with the web. Cutting the cord altogether just isn't feasible today, this strikes a perfect balance.

I struggled with my sleeping rhythm because I could not bring myself to stop browsing the web at night. With the help of LeechBlock and a myriad of strategies, I have finally managed to get a healthy sleeping rhythm. I set LeechBlock to stop all my browsing at midnight. Just beware that if LeechBlock is your _only_ strategy for going to bed, you _will_ fail. But as part of a plan, it works splendidly.

Excellent add-on. Simple to use and effective. Author should do some SEO (not sure how) to push it up the Google search when people look for 'Facebook+block' etc.

Essential Firefox Add-on Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I've been using this Add-on for many years now, and I can say that it is definitely my favourite.

Whenever I need to get any work done, I just put Leechblock into Lockdown mode, and make sure I require a random 64-character password to bypass it.

If you want to increase your productivity, and decrease the amount of time you spend wasted on websites that you don't really need, then you need this.

Hi, firstly, can I just say thank you for an excellent job.

In particular adding the option to hide 'restart with addons' is an epic update. Unfortunately I was clicking on that a bit too much before.....!

However I have a problem, and your forum isn't working anymore.

I clicked the option to hide Leechblock in the Addons menu and now I cannot find it at all. This is only a problem because I want to add some more websites - if there is another way to do this, then please let me know.

Thanks again!

LeechBlock Options

Thanks for the kind review!

There are actually four ways to access the LB Options:

1. via the Tools menu in the Firefox menu bar
2. via the context menu (right-click on a web page)
3. via the LB toolbar button (which you have to add manually: right-click on a toolbar and select Customize)
4. via the Add-ons page (assuming you haven't selected the option to hide LB there)

Let me know if you have any further difficulties.
