What a fantastic little program, lightweight, easy to use, and needs zero setting up.

I just have one small gripe, when clicking on a number to take you to a footnote, often it takes you to either the page before, or the page after where the footnote actually is, and you have to scroll around until you find it.

Other than that, great job!

Yes, there is unfortunately a problem with named anchors in "Book" reading style. I'll try to fix this in the next release.

Almost perfect but I miss the possibility to disable/enable the extension with just one mouse click - as done in FB2 Reader. Would come very handy for those who need to save a bunch of .epub files to the hard drive...

License is Restrictive Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Fine tool, but it is not Free software. The license removes "the freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0)". I encourage the developer to choose an OSI-approved license instead.

I was looking for a simple, light-weight EPUB reader and this extension being under 400KB is just what I wanted. For me, this beats all standalone EPUB readers out there. Great piece of work!! Thank you!!

Excellent work... Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Great add-on and love the new multi-column option. One feature request, however.

Right now, the text alignment of all columns is full justification. The problem is that without a hyphenation feature to help fill each line of text, there are often large spaces between words that make reading difficult.

Would it be possible to add an option that allows for left justification rather than full justification? This feature would eliminate the large awkward spaces between words.

Even better, of course, would be a hyphenation feature, but I imagine that would be a major project since you'd need a dictionary for each supported language.

Thanks for your excellent work...

Jim Wood.

Thanks for your review!

You are right, full justification without additional hyphenation can lead in some cases to large spaces. But that's what possible with CSS means right now. As you guessed, a hyphenation feature is no option because of it's complexity.

Like you proposed, I'll add in one of the next releases a new option for the text justification, so you can decide to choose left justification if you like.

Today I tried this plug-in. While, I liked the speed of the plug-in, there were two problems that I could not overlook.

1. When I open an epub from my hdd, it opens TWO browser tabs. One tab is for the epub, as if it was to be download, and the other the actual reader. One tab should suffice.

2. This plug doesn't show me how pages are in my book. It doesn't even tell me what page I am on. That is unacceptable.

Thanks for your review.

1. This is a known bug which will be fixed in one of the next versions. In this case, it would have been better if you had contacted me via my support-website ;-).

2. Other than physical books, eBooks don't have pages, that's the reason why no page numbers are displayed. Of course you could define "page" as "text which is displayed at a time on screen". But the amount of displayed text varies widely depending on many conditions: screen resolution, screen size, size of browser window, font size, etc. So it's not very useful to use page numbers. Instead, in the next version of EPUBReader there will be a progress bar which displays how far you came reading a chapter.

This is a great epub viewer, thanks!
But I have a feature request to make. Could you add an option to turn off display of epub on the browser automatically? There are occasions when I need to download the epub to the harddisk directly instead of viewing it on the browser. Right now I have to disable the addon in order to do that.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.4.0.1).

Thanks for your review!

In many cases you can already download the file instead of opening it in Firefox: instead of clicking on the link, make a right click and select "Save as". In some cases this doesn't work but as a workaround you could open the file in the first step in Firefox and save it then via EPUBReaders "Save" button to your disk.
I'll put this on the change list, so you will be able to save the file directly to disk in all cases.

Great extension, but bookmarks... Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Great extension, fast and useful. There's only a problem: with mac osx 10.6.5 (firefox 3.6.12) the bookmarks don't work. Bookmarks button is not active. So, when I reopen an epub I see the first page and not the last that I read.
I have already sent an e-mail to the developer.

Thanks for your review! As the analysis shows, this is a problem with a specific epub file, you could set bookmarks in other files. This bug will be fixed in the next version.

Pagination is Great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The new pagination feature in 1.4.0.1 is fantastic! This is now my default epub reader instead of Calibre's.

Need svg support Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Good work, this is a well needed extension, hope you will add svg rendering support soon.

Thanks for your review! SVGs are already supported but disabled because they are right now handled by Firefox as plugins. To enable them, go to the preferences and check "Plugins enabled".

finally a good epub reader Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Just works, fast and well, customisable enough, and reads epubs better than the other standalone software I tried. Thanks!

Perfect ePub reader, but would like better column support Rated 5 out of 5 stars

After having looked all over the web after a cross-platform ePub reader, I finally found EPUBReader for Firefox. It does everything it says and all the formatting and graphics are being showed correctly. It's also really fast and easy to use! Thank you for this great solution to read ePub books... this is what makes Firefox a must-have on my Netbook :)

There is only one thing I would like the developer to implement. The colums feature is great, but unfortunately it's not so practical as I hoped. Instead of continue on the next column when you reach the end of the column on your browser window, you have to scroll down, and then scroll up again to the next colum. I guess this is because EPUBReader fits the whole chapter in one huge window, and therefore just splits the entire chapter into many columns. Would be great if a fix for this would be possible!

Column support

Thanks for your review! Better column support will be available soon.

Terrific add-on, still needs one thing extra to make it perfect... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

...and that would be a search function, unless I'm missing one somewhere. I find Epubreader far easier and quicker to use than any other software on my Macbook, and if I want to open an Epub file, I go to your software first. But there doesn't appear to be a way to search an epub file for the information I need, which can be rather limiting at times. It's the *only* drawback to a superb piece of software.

I tried different eReader software for an ePub ebook I downloaded, and none of them worked properly on my system. This FF add-on did the job simply and perfectly! Like the website too; color-coded makes it easier to read. Flawless software, superb idea. And really solved a problem for me (transferring material to new pda but couldn't see on my PC).

Excellent! I just installed it and tried it on one of my AbintraPress epub titles I'm creating. EPUBReader displays the files faster than the program that created them.

Great Viewer !

Maybe catalog support could be extended to support catalog interchange with emerging standards, like OPDS: Open Publication Distribution System

http://opds-spec.org/blog/2010/06/02/opds-catalog-0-9-published/
http://code.google.com/p/openpub/wiki/OPDS

A way to sync with Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) would be a nice feature.

OPDS

Thanks for your review!

Some OPDS catalogs are already integrated, they can be reached via the ePub catalog.

Easy way to read ePub files. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I searched for a program to read ePub files and found 'uread-universal reader' I installed it and was disappointed with the way it worked and that most of the menus weren't in English (Simplified-Chinese is not that simple). A few days later I heard of this add-on and decided to give it a try. I really like the way it displays the files and keeps an index open on the left. The bookmark is a great feature and has saved a lot of time when I return to a book I'm reading. All-in-all I'd recommend EPUBReader to anyone who wanted an easy, effective way to read ePub files. Thanks for the great add-on!
